Dumb question from a pet-imparied person
DH wants a dog for Xmas and I think I may give in. He wants a basset hound - does the pund usually have puppies or just grown dogs. I'd prefer a puppy. Thanks!!

I think that most pounds have whatever strays are out there - could be a puppy but most are probably older dogs - at least, that has been my experience. HTH!

I would search on petfinder under basset and for puppies. They will list all the pounds/shelters with any available. I would do this first.
P.S. My mom has a basset hound, they are GREAT family dogs!!

great dogs..a little slobbery though. But love them and their slobberiness!
Look for some rescue places. If all else fails go to a reputable breeder.
Puppies are tough..lots of care. They're like babies.

Re: Dumb question from a pet-imparied person
You can find mixed breed puppies at the pound usually, but they may be a large part basset hound and greatly resemble one.
Or you may find an adult pure breed.
Puppies are so hard. We got ours from a pound at 10 weeks. He cried non stop all night long for the first week. Then for the next month he had to go out twice a night to pee. And they can't be home alone 8 hours or more a day cause they can only hold it for 3ish hours.
It was the longest month of my life, I was exaughsted and running home from work everyday at lunch to let the dog out.
I told my DH it was good birth control, were not ready for a baby.
Just be prepared for all that a puppy entails, adult dogs are much easier. If they arent house broken they at least have the physical capacity to be house broken quickly.

SOOOOOOOOO true!! I got Lola at 5 1/2 months.. She had 2 accidents in the beginning and it was my fault.. Even an older puppy is good.... not 8-16 weeeks they will suck the life out of you!!

Shelters will have both puppies and older pets. You can also check out petfinder.com to do a search by breed. There are a ton of rescue organizations that are breed/class specific.

Pounds and shelters are not only for strays. There are a ton of organizations that rescue from places like Puppy Mills, Back Yard Breeders, Pet Shops, etc.
Although many organizations have websites, they are not always maintained as accurately as they should be (mostly due to a lack of funding or lack of volunteers), and you should always try to go in person to see what they have. Also, for organizations like Bide-A-Wee and North Shore Animal League, try to contact them and see if they will give you information regarding when they are expecting a *large influx* of dogs if they have a large rescue planned.

Re: Dumb question from a pet-imparied person
If you can't find what you are looking for through a rescue organization or a shelter please use a reputable breeder and do not buy your dog at a pet store. Good luck!

Re: Dumb question from a pet-imparied person
You should check petfinder. Please do not go to a pet store.
I also think it is worth mentioning sometimes it is difficult to get a dog as a gift through a shelter, they frown upon that. Unless it absolutely has to be a surprise, you and your DH should go together to visit shelters.
Good luck.
