Dumb Question: Solar Panels
So lets just say I got them, that would be great for the summer but what about ther winter to heat the house? I have an oil burner right now and we use that to heat the hot water.

Re: Dumb Question: Solar Panels
solar panels work year round - it is based on sun light and not temrperature - the solar panels store power in batteries for when needed
they work best on a roof that faces south and very little tree coverage around the roof

Re: Dumb Question: Solar Panels
My DH and I are dying to get SOlar panels...I know a couple in east setauket who have solar panels, and once averaged out they paid $5.00 a month for electric (this was about 2 years ago)...we were looking for them when buying a house, and had them show us the bills..We couldn't afford the house, but WOW!

Very few people have batteries in the house. Any excess goes into the grid, and you pull off the grid when you need more than you can create.
Solar panels only create electricity, so you would either need to convert things to electric, or get other "green" methods of heating, like geothermal heat exchangers which use the constant ground temperature to heat and cool the house. A few feet under the ground is always about 60 degrees, all year long.
You can use solar to heat the water, using a separate solar hot water heater, but of all the installers I've talked to, they all pretty much said that it isn't really a good idea out here.... and that's from people who make a living installing these systems.....

Can I ask why? We have solar for our hot water. We bought the house with it, so I don't know much about the installation. But in the 4 years we have been here we don't really have any complaints, except for in the summer the water is HOT. I mean really hot and we have to keep the anti- scold on. But I am curious to hear what you were told since we don't know

They were saying things about it being a more complicated install, and the panels would have to be angled more precisely. At the time, I didn't question them, since I didn't know a whole lot about solar panels. I don't see why it wouldn't be a good option, and I may look into it again in the future.
