Ear thermometers?

We got the Braun Thermoscan Ear Thermometer from our registry and when I opened it at my shower my SIL said I can't use it until Emily is like 2 years old. She said I have to use a rectal until then.

I haven't had to take Emily's temp yet but I'm terrified of using a rectal on her, even those really good ones. It doesn't say anywhere on the package or directions that the ear thermometer is only for older babies. Can it really not be used on a newborn?

Re: Ear thermometers?

My doctor told me they aren't very accurate since the baby's ear canal is so small and they move so much.

I took our digital thermometer into one of her checkups and had him show me how to use it rectally. It was a lot easier than I thought it would be. I was a nervous wreck until he showed me you barely put it up there. Just the metal tip goes in after you put vasoline on it. He showed me to just hold her legs up like I'm changing her diaper. HTH! I read somewhere they can't be used on newborns but not sure the age requirements. I have not used mine either. I learned how to use the rectal thermometer. (It was easier than I thought it would be.)

Re: Ear thermometers?

It can, but its not an exact reading. I never thought I would be able to do a rectal, and some how, it doesn't even phase me one bit.

Re: Ear thermometers?

I don't have one of them c cuz they are not accurate but a friend of mine has the one that you scan on the baby's forehead I heard that is a good one. The digital ones can also be used under the arm as well just put it in th armpit I have done this with marissa and the first time I double checked with doing it rectal as well and the tempature was the same

Re: Ear thermometers?

I used to work in a pediatrician's office- the Dr. will want a rectal temp.
We would tell people to take it rectally and call back.
Good luck!

i take it under the arm. That's what the hospital did and what my doctor's office does. I guess if they suspected a fever with the underarm method they would do rectal for a more accurate number. God help me if I ever have to do that.

Re: Ear thermometers?

I have also heard that the ear thermometers are not that acurate and the best way to get a baby's temp is rectally. I'll have to have my mom show me how to do this.

I used the pacifier thermometer - works much easier - or they have the fever strips that I use now.
