Early bedtimes...
Anyone else struggling with their baby's early bedtime. This is from a totally selfish stand point. Sidney's bedtime is 7. Now that it is so nice out we've been going to a lot of BBQs and get togethers which we find ourselves hanging out past 7. This poor kid has had such an erratic schedule lately. Its so hard cause we have a bedtime routine which starts at 5:45 so we would have to leave a party by 5ish just to get home. And she gets soooo tired and she's not one to fall asleep at a party and miss all the action. Now I know every now and then its OK but right now its like 2x a week.
OK...now I feel like a bad selfish Mommy

Jack goes to sleep at 7. We just bring the pack n play if we are at a friend's house for a bbq/gettogether. If were going to be out past 7 we get a babysitter.
I need him to go to bed at 7 so that when Dh is home we have some alone time to unwind together. I don't mind getting up early so it isn't a big deal.

I'd like to hear from other mommies on this too. Usually if we are going to be out well past 7 we also get a sitter. I think it's happened 3 - 4 times total - shows you how much we go out. Otherwise it's not much past 7 and we just put him to bed a little earlier the next night to try and make up for lost sleep.

Depending on the place, we would bring them into a room & lay down with them. They would conk out for the night. Most of the babies would wind up in the same room. We would use a monitor (this is where the sound/light display comes in handy - so you can see they are crying).
The next night, we put them to bed earlier or try to get in longer naps.

So let's say you stay at a party til 11pm. Do you then wake the baby, take them home, and do they go right back to sleep?

ok well we are probably in the minority but we usually dont follow a schedule when we are not at home. usually his bedtime is around 8 but if we are out, we are out and either he falls asleep where we are or in the car and we then wake him and put him to sleep when we get home. It usually isnt a problem for him to get back to sleep but its partly because he sleeps with us too so its easier for him to fall asleep when we lay down together.

Same here. Miranda has no trouble being off her schedule for a night. Her bedtime is 7-7:30pm but if we're out we're out and we just deal with it. We aren't out that often and we really don't ever stay out very late. 9pm would be a late night for us. I feel like we can't live our life completely dictated by her schedule. I'm sure if we were on the go and had late nights all the time it would be a problem but even if its once a week in the summer I don't feel like its a big deal. I would rather have her with me than leave her with a babysitter.

We do the same for Julia, she doesnt have a problem sleeping, and shes not on a sleeping schedule. She sleeps with us also, so she goes to bed when we go around 10ish. If she falls asleep earlier, then I just put her in our bed w/ out us.

We wouldn't wake them up. In the case of an infant, we would let them sleep in their infant carrier & just carry them out. Usually when I got home,I would dream feed them if they didn't get their last feeding in. For toddlers, if you can put them down (it's difficult), we would just carry them out to the car when we were leaving. THere have been times where it was 11pm & my kids were still running around with the older kids. They're definitely overtired by then. They conk out in the car. The next day we give Maddie at 10am nap & a 1pm nap, Joseph gets a 1pm nap. Bedtime is earlier or the same time.

Gianna goes to sleep at 8 and she is a creature of habit. (18 mos.) We try to follow it if we can and if we know it will be very late- we get a sitter.

We do the same. His usual bedtime is between 8-9 but if we are out he adjusts. On Friday night we went to a party out east and didn't get home until close to 11. He fell asleep in the car on the way home and I woke him BFed him and put him to bed when we got home. Sometimes it takes a little longer to get him to sleep but he's usually fine with it.

Re: Early bedtimes...
my baby is the same way as far as sticking to her bedtime schedule and routine however if we are out...i skip 2 parts of the routine which is bath and story so this way we stay out later so she falls asleep on the way home around the time she would be going to bed...so we just put her in the crib for the night. Or we just find a sitter if we are out way past her bedtime. I wouldnt change your baby's routine because if your child is like mine, you cant screw up a sleep schedule or you will end up with a misereable baby!
