early intervention

Jacob is going to be evaluated on speech through Nassau county on Monday... He is only saying mama and dada and maybe up and hi and my pediatrician said that I have nothing to lose and he should get evaluated. He did say he may not qualify but to gve it a shot...

I was wondering if anyone has gotten services through Nassau county what agency they used for the speech services and evaluation... My case worker told me that if I knew of any speech agncies that were recommended to me she would try to use them..

Also what I will expect at the initial evaluation...

Thanks

Hillary

Re: early intervention

Hi, my daughter was visited today for the early intervention program in queens.
She will get evaluated for speech, ocupational and psychologically as well.
She is two and she says around 10 words clearly.

My daughter will be evaluated and if they see that she qualifies, some one will come to my house, once, twice to my house.

The social worker did say that if I wasn't happy, there were other agencies I could contact.

hope this helps.

Re: early intervention

I cant say enough about Early Intervention. Cole has been getting services since he was 17 months old (he's just over 2 now) and has progressed really well. All of his therapists are exceptionally qualified and caring professionals. It's really not therapy to him -- its just familiar people that come and play with him (and bring fun toys and games!). He looks forward to each session. It's like your very own mommy and me class in your home. They also give solid parenting advice and startegies to carry over into your day to day routine. I highly highly recommend EI. Please FM me with any specific questions you may have. Good Luck!

I recommend All About Kids. Not only do I work for them as a SEIT, but Ihad my son evaluated through them. The evaluators (2 women, a speech and sp.ed. therapist) who came to the house were incredible. They were great with my son and wrote thorough, accurate reports. My friend uses AAK as well and loves them. All About Kids offers many trainings and have very strict regulations for their contractors.

My Jacob is also being monitored by Nassau County Early Intervention. He's been in the program since 3 months old for possible torticollis but it turned out he didnt have it. He is still being monitored though. I get questionaires every couple of months and a case worker calls me to discuss his progress. He is lacking a bit in social skills... and I too am worried about his speech but I will wait for his next ped visit to see what he thinks. Good luck..Chat Icon

Re: early intervention

Thank you all for your information... It is greatly appreciated..

I will bring all of these places up to the case worker. She says she has 4 she uses--so maybe one of them match...

I used to be a team leader for them - I also did a training for them back in August - were you there? Chat Icon

Re: early intervention

We had Andrew evaluated for speech after his second birthday. He didn't qualify Chat Icon We used Variety Child Learning Center, on Humphrey Drive in Syosset (they are local to us). He had two different visit by Nancy and Elyse who were both very nice and accomodating.

Just a FYI: Andrew tested at a 36 months old level and he started talking beautifully a month after he was evaluated, so while we think we jumped the gun, it was worth it.

They come loaded with a bag of toys, Andrew thought he was having a playdate. They ask the parent some questions, and then they do a series of things with the child. Since he had two visits (the first was a special educator to test his cognitive, fine motor and gross motor skills, and the second was a speech pathologist to evaluate his language development), I can't exactly remember what he did with what. But simple things like point out the ballon, which block is red, etc. I am not sure how different it will be based on age... Any other specifics, just FM me!
