Early intervention at home question-

MY DS gets IE services- he gets a teacher 2x per week and speech 2x per week. Speech is in the hi chair and the teacher does his session on the floor in the living room. I sit right next to them the whole time and interact when I see appropriate etc.
Is that the norm? Is it ok that I sit there with them the whole time? He's been getting it since Sept and no one ever said otherwise and I have a great relationship with his teacher, but didn't know what normal procedure was.
No one said not to etc.

Re: Early intervention at home question-

Our teachers were flexible and left it up to me. Eventually I thought it was better for me to be in a different room and I'd go in the last 10 minutes of each session. It was fine!

Early intervention at home question-

In the beginning I sat in, but once DS was completely comfortable I started to phase out. If it's not affecting the session, then I think it's okay if you stay. For us, it was better by the end that I wasn't around.

Re: Early intervention at home question-

Ive done both...sat and participated and also left the room. Ive had 3 kids they have received or are receiving EI and honestly, sometimes it was better if I was there depending on the baby's mood. Itger times, they did.better when I left. I have twins and one twin receives more services than the other and so often I take the.other baby into another room because he dominates the session. Lol. Honestly, you can just ask the therapist what she tjink might be best, but it will often depend on the day, their mood, etc.

Eta: If your presence is not distracting, I like to stay so that I can reinforce what she did, use similar language with him, etc.

Re: Early intervention at home question-

During speech therapy, we are there in the room but we don't interfere. He has a good therapist now who's very strict & does intense work with him & we just kind of observe what's going on but not sit on the floor right near them (although I don't think she'd care if we did).

Re: Early intervention at home question-

DS and his therapists would do the therapy in our basement, I would just leave them down there because if either DH or myself were down there, then DS was easily distracted.

I started being in room when they were babies. When therapy continued at 1yr,2yr I let them alone because my son wanted me more often & caused problems

When both my girls had pt I stayed with them and participated the whole time. Two agencies several therapists and no one ever commented about it. It was helpful bc I was able to see exactly what to do to carry on the exercises between sessions. Dd2 had a hard time in terms of separation anxiety but I think if I'd left the room she would have spent the whole time crying at the door.
