Early voting
This should be a thing in every state. Why is it not a thing in every state? That BS is not fair.

Early voting
I dont believe in early voting, I dont think its a fair move. Voting should be done by all on the same day.

Re: Early voting
I like the ritual of voting on election day. But I like the idea of early voting too- I think in urban areas it can especially help prevent people from standing in long lines.

I watched some interesting commentary against it. First, what if the candidate dies? Second, what if something (like an indictment) comes out? Some places its too late to change your vote...

Re: Early voting
i had never heard of it because i always lived in states without it. this is my first year.
i liked it because i live about 50 miles from work and i have to travel through some seriously crappy traffic. when i voted during the primaries, it was a pain in the ass to get to my polling station in time.
my follow up question is why aren't the primaries held on the same day for all states. by the time it was california's turn, a lot of people had already dropped out of the race.

Re: Early voting
I don't understand the point of it. Why have "Election Day" if you can just vote whenever. Seems stupid to me. EVERYONE in EVERY state should have to wait until today to cast a vote.

And if you can't do it today?
They should have a 3 day span for voting, one of those days a weekend day. Then many more people could be accommodated.
If the name bothers you, they can change the name to 'election period' instead of 'election day'.

The polls are open early enough and close late enough that I think most people can find 10 minutes to run in and vote. If voting is important to someone then they'll find a way to get to the polls. I don't think dragging it out for days will increase the number of people voting. JMO.

I get what you are saying, but not everyone could actually vote on election day. Just as an example, my brother lives in Suffolk County but works for the FDNY in the City - so if he has a 24 hr shift, there is a good chance he would not be able to get to his polling place. Doctors, nurses etc could possibly face the same type of barrier, and probably other jobs that I haven't thought of.

I think it would increase the number of votes, and make voting more enjoyable since people don't have to stand in line for hours since in theory the votes would be spread out by 1/3rd. It may only take you 10 minutes to vote, but in other states people wait in line for hours.
Why does it matter if polls are open for 3 days instead of 1? And if they're open for 3 weeks ahead of that, who cares? Some people won't change their mind no matter what happens, so go ahead and cast it early. And for the question of, what if a candidate was to die, I'm sure if a candidate died it would throw the whole process out of whack and we probably wouldn't be voting on Nov 8th anyway. So they would just throw away all the votes already collected and start over.

Exactly this. I have to be on the road by 5am to get to work and i don't get home until the polls are closed. I could not vote without early voting. Going to work late or leaving early is not a logistal option. Seems very narrow minded to me not to realize there are situations necessary for early voting. What is someone had a scheduled c-section yesterday?

They should have had a late term abortion, because it is called Election DAY and not Election DAYS.

Early voting
And in a lot of cases it doesn't take 10 minutes to vote.
A lot of people do not have transportation to the polls, cannot take off work to get to the polls, do not have childcare, etc. Election Day should be a holiday anyway, IMO.

Early voting
I love early voting and think it should be in every state.. absolutely. Makes no sense NOT to have it.
Especially in states that are heavy in population. We had huge turn outs to early voting and yet they still have huge turn outs to the standard voting day. That means if they had limited it to just today the lines would have been prohibitive. Those with special needs and special time tables were given a chance to vote under less pressure.
I personally just wanted it over. Done with.
We had something like two weeks to vote, including weekend hours. To me that's showing we WANT you to vote, we believe your voice matters, we absolutely care. Not just "hey you are find a way to show up on that Tuesday or too bad, so sad"
Now if only each vote actually counted versus electoral college. Still I must say I'm proud of our ability to get the votes we can. We all hear all this 'go vote' and 'make it count' why not allow early voting?
I also like that since it is required to have our IDs it makes it easier to vote since our ID prove our voting district and we can easily vote anywhere in the city during early voting periods instead of just near our homes. But it shows up with our own Ballots for our district.

Early voting
Just wanted to add: I have seen several posts on the Pantsuit Nation FB site this morning about people who are sick and in the hospital but were able to vote early -otherwise they would not have been able to vote at all. While I understand the excitement of everyone voting on the same day, I think it's much more important that the greatest number of people are actually able to vote. Early voting allows for a greater voter turnout - for whatever reason people may choose to take advantage of that option

I have always thought that it should be more than just one day. Not everyone is able to get to the polls on one specific day. Yes, I know there are absentee ballots, but that can be a mess. Also, sometimes things come up unexpectedly. There might be less waiting around on long lines if people had more options. I know several people who don't vote because of the lines. They already have a lot going on with work and their own schedules, they don't have a lot of free time to stand around on long lines.

Re: Early voting
Idk, there are HOW MANY MILLION nyc residents, registered voters...? Is it realistic to think they can all get in to vote on one specific day and be in and out in 10 minutes at that? Not even close.

Agree. It's a logistical nightmare. It's just not realistic in a nation as large and diversified as ours to expect some (not all) voters to be available on one specific day. I get the excitement of having one specific day, but I just don't think it's realistic. This country spans how many different time zones?? Lol it's bananas!
