EBF baby will not take bottle

Anyone else have this problem? He cries when we try to give him a bottle. I go back to work in a few weeks and I am getting so nervous.

Any tips?

Re: EBF baby will not take bottle

try different nipples. DS would only take the ortho nipples in the beginning.

Re: EBF baby will not take bottle

Let some one besides you try to feed the bottle. You should leave the room or even the house.

Make sure the person doing the feeding is patient and calm. It will help DC stay calm.

Squeeze a little BM onto the nipple of the bottle for DC to be able to taste.

What type of bottles/nipples are you using? Others may have tips based on type.

Is the bottle warm enough?

I had a friend with the same trouble and her DS took a bottle the first day she went to work and wouldn't anytime before that.

I'm having the same problem. DD is 3 months tomorrow. I'm not going back to work until Sept. so I think I'm just giving up with the bottle. We were having DH give it to her but he's been getting home from work so late. Good luck! Also, maybe try a faster flow nipple. I found that my breast flow was much faster than a bottle nipple.

DD initially refused to take bottles if she knew I was around. She still fusses if I try to give a bottle rather than nurse her.

Now when DH is giving her a bottle, I go and run errands.

Re: EBF baby will not take bottle

I have tried avent, brestflow, and medela. He has taken a bottle once before and now he wants nothing to do with it. I have had DH try and my mother. I have left the room and hte house. I am so frustrated. He was taking the bottle ok until I came home...maybe that had something to do with it?

That could definitely have something to do with it. I heard somewhere that babies can smell you. My pediatrician said to be persistent. My dd was taking a bottle no problem in the beginning of July 'cause my DH was home for a few days. I think if we had a few more days she would have been fine. I made him take a few days off and we called it "operation bottle" Try Dr. Browns or maybe the playtex nurser. Chat Icon

DS was like this too. My DH had to put him in a postion like he was going to breastfeed him, then try to get the bottle as close to his own chest as possible. Then, DS stopped taking it that way. He would only take it while lying ion the floor. Try different positions. You did your job EBF, now it's DH's job to make sure that he feeds as much as possible with the bottles, without you around.

ITA, I had the same problem and I was so upset but he did finally take to the bottle after several tries.

Good to hear. I mean I really can not go back to work with a baby attached to my boob!
