Edited to add pictures, finally... Ever complain about an abandoned property?

There's a house in my nice little neighborhood that is abandoned. It's in horrible disrepair, gutters hanging off the house, broken windows with glass on the lawn, weeds waist high.

I'm trying to remember that Suffolk County website to get info on the house - the owners names and stuff.

Has anyone ever reported a house like this? They just put a sad looking wire fence around the whole property - I'm assuming for safety and to prevent people from vandalizing because of the windows - but I'm wondering if any effort would be futile.

I want to post a picture of this house... It's making me crazy that I can't remember that website that gives the house info, pic and details...

ETA:

They finally put it up for sale on MLS! They mowed the weeds first and put a proper chain-link around the property. Funny thing is they didn't post the side that has the gutters falling off and broken windows. These pictures are bad enough, I guess!

I don't know the website but I know some houses stay in limbo that way for years for mutilple reasons.

No successors or they are being looked for.

Successors fight over the will and everything is on stand still.

we have a house in the exact condition a few blocks away It has been that way for the entire 4 years we've lived here. My neighbor told me the owner was in prison & his mother that was living there died. It just came on the market, its being sold by an attorney. We went & looked at it but the roof was blown out so long the whole inside of the house is filled with mold. It basically needs to be knocked down. Hopefully someone will buy it now & do something with it.

When those fences go up, sometimes it means that the house will be knocked down. At least that's what it means in Nassau.

If it is in such poor condition, I would definitely call the town and report it. You will most likely not be the first call...

You might be able to post a picture using a screen shot from google maps.

you can call your town and file a notice about an abandoned property. That happened to us when our neighbor just up and left last yearChat Icon

If a bank owns the house, they will usually come and board the windows but they are also responsible for mowing the lawn - the bank has someone coming to the house near me 1x mth to at least keep the place looking halfway decent.

Yes, I called the town on one in my neighborhood and the owners came and mowed the lawn and started cleaning the inside.
Looks like they "abandoned" it again as the lawn is overgrown again though. Chat Icon

No street view for this property.

Amazingly, the google satellite shows a tidy house and yard. We've been here almost a year and it's been like this at least that long.

Thanks ladies, I'm going to call.

Well they finally put this "house" up for sale and I found out, it's zoned commercial. I don't know who would buy this piece of crap (updated in first post).

While searching the commercial listings, I found out that the Tic Toc Cafe in St. James is also for sale. Chat Icon
