I feel your pain! DH and I are in the house hunting process now and when our mortgage broker went over the numbers with us I saw my dreams of possibly working p/t after baby is born out the window.

Re: EEK Finding a house...
We bought a house 1 yr before we got married in a not so great school district(Islandia-Central Islip schools) The house is .33 acres, 4BD-2 up 2 down, 1 3/4 baths. It is called a farm ranch or expanded ranch and the best part of all....it cost 287,000! We really only did cosmetic improvements. We figured even if I got pregnant the next day we'd still have 6 yrs before our 1st baby would be in school. We have been here for 2 1/2 yrs and are TTC now. I think we made a smart decision. I think we could probably sell the house for about 350 now-you can still find houses in the low threes I think

Re: EEK Finding a house...
Our 1st house we bought over 8 years ago and was a bank for closure. A total wreck, every wall had to be ripped out, kitchen, bathrooms, horribly mess! We worked it from the moment we bought till almost when we sold a few years later. The neighborhood and SD were so so, nothing we wanted to raise kids and stay long. It was all worth it though, we made our money back and then some.
Our 2nd house, excellent area and SD needed a lot of TLC as well, not as bad though. Ripped out the kitchen and bathrooms and all else is mainly painting, molding, decorating and such to fit our style, etc...
If your DH is handy I say look into "handy man special - needs work" homes. It is all worth it in the end even through the mess of construction, believe me we are still going through it this moment. Best of luck to you

Re: EEK Finding a house...
I know how you feel! DH and I live in Northern VA where housing costs are ridiculous too. Our solution? Move out of state! We're moving to Colorado at the end of this month

Re: EEK Finding a house...
Ahh the joys of finding a house on LI! We are closing on Thursday, moving in on Saturday. Luckily we know the people we bought the house from (very close friends of the family) so we really didn't have any stress and knew the house is exactly what we wanted. We were VERY close to moving out of state but decided not too because of our jobs. Its never easy finding a house here. Good luck to you!
