Egg based flu shot? Should I give him eggs first?

Dr told me to give egg whites till 1 year...but he wants me to give a flu shot-aren't they egg based though?

Are any of his 1 year shots egg based?

My DD just got the flu shot. The nurse asked if DD had an allergy to eggs and I told them I hadn't fed them to her yet. They had us wait around for 15 minutes after giving the shot to see if she would have a reaction. She didn't.

She has to get a second shot in a month. I'm still going to wait until 1 year to give her eggs.

ETA: I just wanted to add that my DH and I have no food allergies. That is why I felt safe giving her the shot at this age. If a reaction occurred, at least we were in the office where they could administer meds quickly. Reactions typically occur within minutes.

I read that you have an egg allergy. If I were you, I'd probably wait to give him egg whites and consult a ped at the office. If he does get the egg-based shot, at least he's in the office and they can administer meds if he has a reaction.

So what kind of reaction would happen if she was allergic to eggs and what would they do to counteract that? Do they make egg free flu shots anyone know? I didn't even think about this and DD will be getting one next month most likely.

I have an egg allergy so I always avoided the shot, but I can get the nasal one. The dr kept pushing the nasal one on me. I know years ago at the allergist office, there were egg free shots..not sure if they are kid safe or still around though.

I am so glad you wrote about this. I never knew that the flu shot was egg based and I think my DD is allergic to eggs. Thanks sooooo much for writing about this topic! I swear, I learn so much from LIF.

Ryan is allergic to eggs and the MMR shot has egg in it. He had to receive the shot at the allergist's office rather than the pediatrician's office. The doctor said there was less egg in the shot than would be in a cookie, so I wasn't too worried. I guess it depends on how serious the allergy is.

Janice...are you currently giving him food with eggs in it at all? I have been with Gillian and yesterday I decided to give her eggs with turkey cut up and she loved it. I dont thin 1 is written in stones and I agree with your main point of giving him eggs before this flu shot.

I give him yolks...like when I make waffles, I only put the yolk in. Since I have an egg allergy, and he has allergies already, I did not really want to push it.

My DD has an egg allergy. We skipped (and will skip) the flu shot. She did ok with the MMR.

I do not plan on giving the flu shot to DD #2 because I don't know yet if she is allergic and I won't take the chance.

We found out that DD #1 had an egg allergy when I gave her just an egg yolk for breakfast. She had an anaphaltic reaction to it - I just didn't know that's what it was at the time.
