Elevated White Blood Cell count? a little long.
I got a call from my Dr this morning (not the nurse...which was weird) - apparently my WBC levels are double what they should be.
I had bloodwork done on 3/4 and the WBC came back high, but I was getting over bronchitis. Bloodwork was repeated on 3/25 and the WBC levels are exactly the same as they were on 3/4...according to the Dr, this is a sign of infection somewhere.
I should mention that I feel totally fine.
I'm also a little anemic - that could have something to do with the fact that I can't stomach meat and tend to throw it up.
She said that they can't pinpoint the cause for the elevated WBC at the OB's office and that I have to see a hematologist this week.
I got an appt with the hematologist first thing Wednesday morning, so at least I don't have to wait/worry too long.
I've done some googling and it doesn't seem like this is all too uncommon in pregnancy, but I'm just curious if anyone else has been through it, and what the outcome was.
Thanks

Re: Elevated White Blood Cell count? a little long.
I had a slightly elevated WBC at an appointment and they said it was likely a UTI or something similar (even though I didn't think I had one). I had to give a repeat urine sample, but I had such an issue trying to track down the results that I eventually gave up and everything was fine at the next appointment. I'm sure that's not much help!

you're a nut
Mine was high over 2 appts, so i guess that's why they're sending me to the specialist.
I just want to stand outside and scream, "WHAT NOWWWWW?!?!?" That's seriously how I feel lately!

Sorry! But, yes, I guess high WBC over two appointments might make them take notice.
Is it possible that it's just leftover from when you were sick? If you don't feel sick, then those cells are doing their job!!!

that's what I thought, and I asked the Dr as well - she said it's not likely, because the count is JUST as high now as it was when I was sick!

Re: Elevated White Blood Cell count? a little long.
I had this problem prior to my pregnancy. In my family, we are genetically predisposed to high WBC. I have a very low B12 count and that contributes to the high WBC. I saw a hematologist for about 6 months before they diagnosed my problem was due to the B12. So now I take 1000mg's of b12 sublingual every day. Since I started this, I have been MUCH healthier and my immune system has been stronger.
Good luck and I hope you get good news!

Re: Elevated White Blood Cell count? a little long.
When you are pregnant you HAVE an elevated WBC which is completely normal. Google WBC in pregnancy and see what you find. My family Dr did this to me last pregnancy and sent me to a hemotologist and the hemotologist laughed at the family Dr and said that was pure ignorance on their part. I wouldnt be worried its a waste of your precious time thats all.... He even sent me back to the family Dr with the stuff he googled so to say dont waste his time anymore HAHAHAH

thanks! this helps... but I already take an additional b12/b6/folic acid sublingual everyday --- and my 8wk and 12wk BW was perfectly normal. This is just something that popped up about a month ago!

Re: Elevated White Blood Cell count? a little long.
I couldn't get my bloodwork done with quick results last week (I knew "something" was up) so I was sent to the ER.
10 hours in the ER to find out I had a bladder infection which is totally common during pregnancy.
I hope it's something that simple for you!

Re: Elevated White Blood Cell count? a little long.
I had this with my girls (so keep in mind that this was a million years ago) I also had low platelets...
I had the initial blood draw that came back abnormal...then the redraw...same results...they sent me to the hematologist and by the time I got there everything was fine...
She told me that it was a sign of infection and my body had fought it off...

Re: Elevated White Blood Cell count? a little long.
number was still a little high today, but not far off from normal. Hematologist said he thinks it's just due to the pregnancy, but he's sending the blood out for more tests just in case.
Pretty sure all is OK though!
Thanks for the love
