embarased to admit...godparents question
so DH and I have finally gotten around to asking godparents for the baptism...well when I asked the godmother she mentinoed about buying a cross or outfit for the baby...is this a requirement...dh and I feel foolish but we didn't know this....I honestly do not need for either of them to buy anything for my child and don't want them to feel they must, especially her, is this typically what godparents do...I don't want to offend her but don't know does my child really need a cross for the baptism, I would prefer they don't buy anything....

then justhave her give the baby a bond if she wants to do something.. but generally they are given a cross to wear for the baptism.

Re: embarased to admit...godparents question
It is very common for the Godmother/father to buy the outfit and a cross. Nothing is written in stone. and they are not obligated.

Re: embarased to admit...godparents question
Some people buy a cross or the outfit but it depends on the family. DD's godfather gave her a cross, her godmother gave her a bracelet and money.
I have my godson (Gatsbygirl's DS) a cross

It all depends on the family. In my family the tradition is that the Godmother buys the outfit and the Godfather buys the cross.

Re: embarased to admit...godparents question
My DD godparents bought a cross and her Christening outfit. I think it's pretty commonplace....not that I expected it though.

Re: embarased to admit...godparents question
I had never heard of the outfit until I saw it on this site. (Then again in my family we all wore the same outfit) The cross was what I always thought a Godmother bought. But, if you don't think that is something you want then just tell her. I think honesty is your best bet here.

Re: embarased to admit...godparents question
I don't think its a "requirement". I didn't buy my goddaughter a cross, though I did buy her dress & gave a gift. Her mother wasn't aware of the dress tradition, but I wanted to do it.
Ella's godparents did not buy Ella a cross - I didn't want one for her. And they didn't buy her outfit either (my mother did).

I have heard that the godmother buys the outfit. She probably doesn't want to do the wrong thing either.

My family does the same thing. I didn't realize this until I was the godmother to my nephew in October and I christened my son in December.

same here. Godmother/fahter also gave a bond.
ETS: I did not want a cross for DD, so the godmother/father opted for a tradition we do. (diamond necklace). My MIL bought her the diamond cross.
For my god daughter, I bought the dress and a diamond cross and bond and clothes.

I had never heard of it either, til I came to this site. (But I'm not from here.) I think I threw them off by making DS's gown from my wedding gown. They didn't know what to do. And I didn't know I did anything 'wrong'.

Re: embarased to admit...godparents question
Our Godparents gave very generous savings bonds. I honestly didn't expect anything. It has been told to me that the godparents should chip in and purchase the outfit.
It's up to you.

We have similar tradition here too. I say let them buy what they want. I bought both my goddaughters the outfit, a photo album, a bracelet and gave money/savings bonds. DH was godfather to one of my goddaughters and bought a diamond cross.
My son's both got the cross from godfathers/parents as well as the outfit and other gifts of money and jewelry from them.

Re: embarased to admit...godparents question
For my Godchild my sis's son, i bought him a cross. My sis mil bought him his outfit, if she hadnt then i would have got him that too.
My sis is the Godmother of my dd and she just bought her the dress and accessories. She is also planning on with my brother (Godfather) to buy her a cross. I didnt expect my sis to do so, but she wanted too. Shes very generous to my DD. I feel very lucky to have her.

It's nice too, Jules
I actually didn't know about the outfit thing either and got it on my own.
