That's why I WON"T buy them ...they can break way too easily.
I have had them for 6 months
not one has even come CLOSE to breaking
and I have 2 crazy cats that are all over the place

Personally, I can't remember the last time I broke a light bulb. It's been decades, at least.
Instead of worrying about breaking CFL's (of which I've had in my orchidarium since before they were popular), I'm just aware of the danger and am careful when changing them.
Your garden hose probably has lead in it. So much so, that there's a warning that you should wash your hands after handling it. I found a similar warning on a potted plant that sits next to me at work. Don't get me started on teflon. 
It's all around us. If we're informed and we take intelligent precautions, I think it will be fine.

I have maybe broken 1 regular LB in my life when it got stuck in a lamp
and the CFL ones seem more durable to me
plus my electric bill went down $50 a month

I didnt know this and I think all the bulbs in my apartment are CFL
