ENT Rec/Question? Preferably Queens/Manhattan? (Health x-post)
Hey everyone! I'm looking for an ENT doctor. I haven't been to my regular doctor yet since I haven't been able to get over there this week. On Monday morning I started having this terrible itching in my ear. Since then it's gotten worse and there's been other symptoms- swollen glands, tenderness around and outside ear, headaches. From my online research, I believe it's a fungal infection (or "swimmer's ear") and not a regular bacterial infection. It's not so much painful as annoying. But from all the accounts online I've seen, going to a regular doctor usually makes it worse as they don't recognize it as a fungal infection off the bat and perform treatments for bacterial infections which can actually make the fungal infection WORSE. So I'd like to avoid all that noise and go right to an ENT doctor. So if anyone has an ENT doctor they really like, please let me know.
Also, do you know if I need a referral from my GP to see an ENT? Does it depend on the insurance- I have Blue Cross....
TIA!
Linky.

I love Dr. Myles Mittlelman in Forest Hills. Really easy to get to by train.
Whether or not you need a referral depends on entirely on your insurance

Right by me! That's what I like to hear! I'll look into my insurance now, or just ask my co-worker since she basically lives at the doctor's office.

Also, I hope you feel better.
One summer when I was a kid I had HORRIBLE ear pain. it got worse when i was on vacation and I had to go toa doctor while I was on vacation (the ONE vacation of my life and i was in pain). I had been on medication that didn't help. This guy diagnosed it as swimmer's ear and the meds he gave me worked immdiately. After that i was MUCH more careful about water in my ears. i LIVED in the water back then. So long story short hopefully getting that right diagnosis will make you feel better ASAP

Thank you!! It HAS to be swimmer's ear. My sister gets ear infections a lot and it just doesn't sound like what she gets. Actually she had an ear infection last time she went to Disney 2 years ago and was miserable, this time she leaves for Disney Sunday and I have the infection! lol! I'd rather have it than her though!
But I was in DR recently so I spent a LOT of time in the water. It has to be from that. It's such a strange pain though- it'll be fine for awhile and then out of nowhere I get this strange, shooting ache. I can't even describe it.
I found a lot of at home remedies online for the pain, but I don't want to stick anything in my ears (vinegar, boric acid?! Those sound bad in my ears!) until I speak to a doctor. Can't wait to get rid of this though!

There is an over the counter thing to hel-p dry your ears out which the doc did tell me to take.
I wonder if eating yogurt would help since it's essentially a yeast infection?

Honestly, it probably would. There's pills, too, but I forget what they are called. Our vet actually recommended giving our dog the pills when he had this a few years ago! It seemed to help a little, but not like a good cleaning at the vet and drops did. But I still give him some if I notice his ears getting itchy again.
