Re: Epidural- Numbness in Legs
this part is my biggest fear of an epi or spinal. I am afraid I will start having panic attacks. I dont like not feeling parts of my body. I was flipping out a few years ago when I couldnt feel my knee for hours b/c they gave me lidocaine when I needed stitches. I thought I was never going to get the feeling back.

Re: Epidural- Numbness in Legs
I could always feel my legs. That may be because I got an epidural very late and only had it for about 45 mintues before they turned it off and I started pushing.

Re: Epidural- Numbness in Legs
what you get for natural verse c-section is different, no?
Before I knew I was having a c-section the epi they gave me allowed me to still feel my legs,,they just tingled as if they fell asleep. When they brpught me into the OR, they took out the epi needle from my back and replaced it and that is when I was completely numb~

They probably gave you a spinal.

Re: Epidural- Numbness in Legs
I had a spinal and would say I could feel tingles and my legs (although I couldn't move them) about an hour after. Full mobility took between 2-3 hours.
Not a fun feeling.

Re: Epidural- Numbness in Legs
I felt my legs within an 1/2 to hour of the epi being shut off.
Nurses got me on my feet.

Re: Epidural- Numbness in Legs
No one warned me so I panicked....
If this should happen to you...just keep reminding yourself that is is only temporary and the numbness will go away...

You can always feel and move your legs when you have an epidural they just get a little numb and tingly. Sometimes though when you have an epidural and you need a c/section they do use the epi to completely niumb you and normally feeling returns within 2-3hrs.

Re: Epidural- Numbness in Legs
A friend of mine was paralysed for some time afterwards due to the epidural & a pinched nerve (a very rare occurence). She started walking again at about 3 months.

Re: Epidural- Numbness in Legs
I still felt them, they were heavy as hell though. After pushing for jsut about 1 1/2 hours, I got up to pee after the episiotomy and walked by myself didnt need help. Now heres a scare for you- and Im ok- when they did the first attempt on the epi my right leg jerked right into the nurse I said um is my leg suppose to do that, and the dr. said to the nurse did her leg move and she said um uh huh, then he must have pulled it out and reinserted and then my right thigh jerked, I said um my thigh just jerked, the nurse said are you hitting a nerve he goes oh no we never go into the nerve well what the hell made my leg jerk twice for?????????? I was scared but the labor pain subsiding made me feel better and I still felt my leg even with the numbness.

Re: Epidural- Numbness in Legs
It was taken out right after I gave birth and I was walking 2 hours later. I fell asleep after they took the baby to the nursey so I dont remember if I could or couldnt feel them.

Re: Epidural- Numbness in Legs
I was never completely numb. I always felt my legs, but they were heavy. I was up and walking an hour or so after - I didn't try before that so I don't know if I could or couldn't earlier than that.
I think I had full feeling back in my legs before they finished they finished the episomity.

Re: Epidural- Numbness in Legs
I had an epidural at 11am and was ready to push around 2:30. They had to turn it down so I could feel enough to push. I delivered at 4:10pm and after they cleaned everything up I got out of bed and walked to the bathroom. The nurse was shocked, apparently that's not really normal, but I felt fine.

Re: Epidural- Numbness in Legs
It took me 6 hours after delivering him to feel my legs. It was weird, but i didn't freak out, i could slowly feel my toes coming back and then the legs.
They must have given me a huge dosage-I didn't feel a thing when i pushed.
