estimation lesson 3rd grade?
i am being observed next week and need a great lesson on estimation for 3rd grade. something about how/when you'd estimate in real life to help you. front end estimation vs rounding...
any brilliant books or literacy connections i could use?
thanks!

Re: estimation lesson 3rd grade?
these books are fun
Maybe have jars/containers around the room filled with different things, such as candy, paper clips, pennies, etc.
Read the book and then have them go around the room and try to estimate how much is in each conainer. Give them time to do this and then go over the answers. Maybe you can incorporate tallying, too, like for container A, if you estimated between 20-30, raise your hand...etc.

Re: estimation lesson 3rd grade?
My math coach told me that kids often respond to estimation by thinking of a bus line. So say you have to get off 37th street, but your bus stops only with numbers ending with 0 so your bus will either stop at 30th street of 40th street. Would you rather walk 7 blocks from 30th street or 3 blocks from 40th street (obviously the kids will say 40th) and thats how they visualize estimation. Its a nice touch if you can get crafty and make a bus with different stops so the kids actually see this....

This is awesome - I wish someone had told me this when I was teaching it!
