Ever have a terrible physical fight break out in your room?
fists, furniture, you name it... they were all flying! It was a VERY scary situation.
How do you handle situations like these?

I ran out to get the dean but didn't think to get the kids in the hall. Thankfully nobody got hurt! The dean ran in and told the kids to get in the hall and broke up the fight. The kids were never left alone in the room because I have a para in there, but I was later told I should have had a student get the dean while I stayed with the kids. It was one of those situations where you think "fight or flight" and I was in panic mode so I fleed I figured it was ok since my para was still with the kids and someone HAD to get the dean.. but at least now I know what to do if there is a next time. It was very scary......

Re: Ever have a terrible physical fight break out in your room?
this happened once when I was subbing 6th grade and 2 boys were fighting before dismissal..one boy got on a desk and was ready to jump on the other and I YELLED...everything stopped..he didn't jump, but while I continued to watch them and yell every so often (we are not allowed, under any circumstances to get near/touch them), I got on the phone and asked for help...we are always told that only teachers can supervise kids, so I get why you left the para..next time, have her go out and get someone fast...sorry this happened

Re: Ever have a terrible physical fight break out in your room?
Yes it's a daily occurrence in my school. I've seen some brutal, vicious fights where I couldn't even believe what I was seeing. I've seen them covered in blood, thrashing around, beating up the safety agents who are trying to calm them... total chaos. Last time it took 3 agents just to cuff one kid, it was crazy.
But anyway, if it happens in my vicinity, I just call security on the classroom phone, or the dean's office. I will NOT get too close... last time my AP tried to break up a fight & was thrown down to the ground & got hurt... I'm not risking my own safety over it.
I think you did the right thing in your case!!!!

Never a physicall altercation but very close. I was lucky enough to have male para in my room and he took one of them out then I promptly called security. If there is a fight I would NEVER get int he middle, I would not risk my own safety (plus I am preggers).

I also wanted to say...do not try to break it up--leave it to security--I forget the specifics but if you get hurt the DOE does not cover you and you can actually get in trouble for touching students/interferring

never in my own class...but I did have one break out in the classroom next to me.
It was unreal. All of a sudden we just heard all the desks move back and LOTS of screaming and yelling (it was two girls fighting) through the wall.

It happens frequently in my setting. I do not touch children so I call for support.

Duck?
Seriously though, this always seems to happen when I'm in the hallway I back up and try to get the uninvolved kids out of the way, pick up my phone, and call the dean!! DO NOT try to break it up; if you're hurt, the DOE insurance won't pay your medical bills.

Re: Ever have a terrible physical fight break out in your room?
Never happened in my school; although we've been told to never get in the middle of it. We were told a story of how a teacher was holding a child back and ended up breaking his arm in the process & SHE got sued.
We were told to stay in the room; send for help.

Re: Ever have a terrible physical fight break out in your room?
Yes, however, it was in a school that was for emotionally distressed teenagers and all staff was trained in restraint technique. So, I restrained many kids during my time there when fights broke out. I once had a kid put himself through a sliding glass door because he didn't want to listen to me teach. He had shards of glass sticking out of his body. THAT was fun.

Re: Ever have a terrible physical fight break out in your room?
I've seen lots of fights- but I feel fortunate that there has only been one really bad one in my room while I was teaching- girls no less- it was terrible, there was a huge chunk of hair on the floor.
I do not allow my kids to get out of their seats without permission- I think to some extent that helps me maintain overall order.

I don't allow my kids out of their seats without permission either... but this kid was in a rage. When they're at that point, they really could care less what they have and don't have permission to do!
Anyway, p.s.- this kid is out of my class!!
