Experience with little girls and a UTI - Update on bottom.
A few times in the past few days, after going to the bathroom, Marron has told me that her coochie hurt. I tried asking her more questions about it but was not able to get any more information. I'm going to call the doctor this am, but is there anything else I should be asking or doing for her? Is it even possible for a 3 year old to get a UTI?

Re: Experience with little girls and a UTI
Yes, it is entirely possible she has a UTI. I was floored to learn it's fairly common in little girls...DD had her first one the week before she turned 1
Definitely take her in to the ped. They'll do a urine catch and test it; then if it comes back with any "red flag cultures", they'll either do another catch, or will do a catheter on her.
Since DD had one so young, we were sent for some testing of her kidneys/bladder, where they did find she had a few malformations that could possibly be causing the UTIs. They also check for kidney reflux (which she does NOT have, but a friend on here, her DD got a UTI a while ago and was tested and she DOES have the kidney reflux and has to be on antibiotics every day).
DD wasn't old enough to complain that anything hurt, but it was obvious the first time she had one that something was wrong. I walked into her room in the middle of the night when she was crying and her diaper (urine) STUNK, I mean I gagged...so did DH. And she had a raging (105+) fever for a long time that day until they did the testing and it came back UTI+ and she was put on antibiotics. However, it can not present itself so strongly other times...she had one 2 months ago and her urine had an ammonia-y smell, she had a slight fever only twice (that went away on it's own), I reallllly didn't think it was a UTI initially b/c her symptoms were SO different than the 1st time. But after 2 weeks of testing (b/c the urine still smelled and the peds were brushing me off that it was nothing), it DID come back as a UTI and we started the antibiotic again.
Hope that helps...keep us posted!

Re: Experience with little girls and a UTI
Thanks for all the great info. Her urine doesn't smell, and she hasn't had a fever, or not one that was noticeable by any means. I hope we'll be able to get a urine sample from her. I don't think I'll be able to put the urine bag on her; maybe we can make a game out of trying to pee in a cup!

Re: Experience with little girls and a UTI
Genevieve got one while we were in Disney. At first, she just refused to go to the bathroom. Her pee STANK. And then, she started screaming in pain every time she went to the bathroom. And then the fever hit. We tried flushing it out ourselves by making her drink alot of water, but after 2 days she was still fighting going to the bathroom, so we took her to the dr. and they tested her urine and put her on an antibiotic.

Yeah, the collection is a pain with DD. She isn't potty trained yet, and is actually scared of the potty right now, and when we were there 2 months ago they kept trying to push me towards having her pee in the cup (b/c it is a "cleaner" sample than the urine bag), and I knew there was NO WAY she'd pee in the cup, NONE. I mean, absoultely no way she'd do it. So we had to suffer through the bag collection and that was a pain, she refused to pee for HOURS
Maybe she has a bladder infection or something? I don't know the symptoms of that, but I hope they can figure it out for you

When we thought miki had one, they were going to do a cathether (sp) in the hospital. As soon as she saw the tubing, she freaked and said "I have to pee in the toilet" (she had not peed for like 15 hours when we brought her to the ER)
they gave us this pan thing to put into the toilet to catch her pee and they said that was fine
maybe your dd can do this

Re: Experience with little girls and a UTI
Sorry I'm updating so late, but the doc said that her urine looked "clear". She said that perhaps she is constipated, which can also cause vaginal pain when she pees. Anyway, she gave us a dose of Senokot for now to help her "go". She said she is going to send the urine out to check for a bladder infection and gave us a prescription for an antibiotic to fill if she suddenly gets much worse or develops a fever before the urine culture is back, probably on Monday.
p/s - getting the urine sample was easier than I expected. I made it fun, seeing if we could get pink, green, blue, whatever color out and she let me hold the cup under her while she peed!
