Experience with Pull-Ups
I would really like to start potty training a little more aggressively and think that Pull-Ups might be a good choice for us. So far I have been asking him if he wants to use the potty and the answer is always NO because he figured out that of course, to use the potty he needs to stop playing. He now also hates changing his diaper and it is a struggle every single time.
I have been reading some info on Pull-Ups site and it seems that the main idea is that when wearing them the child FEELs wet and dirty and doesn;t want to be in it anymore. And of course, most importantly, he realizes that he GETS dirty when he pees/poops.
I know some people prefer just letting them go nakked but it will not work in our situation for a number of reasons. Was anyone successful with Pull-Ups? How did it go? How old was yoru child when you started? Can you give me a few points?

Re: Experience with Pull-Ups
We never used Pull-ups, we went straight to underwear (with plastic pants over them if we went out somewhere) and I brought along a change of clothes wherever we were too. My son was 2 years and 7 months when we started training him because he was ready (hiding in closets to do his thing, and then demanding to be changed immediately afterwards), and it took about a week.
Good luck!

I'm trying this right now and was wondering what worked for you as far as how you went about training. We were doing great a few months back and he totally regressed, but he will be 3 in Oct and I know he understands the whole concept...he just wont do it!

Re: Experience with Pull-Ups
Honestly, it was all in the timing. He was just ready, and I was extremely lucky with him that he just seemed to "get it" all on his own. He was one of those "self-trainers". I know that my younger son will not be as easy... who can get that lucky TWO times?
That said, here is how it went:
The day before we started, I took him to Target and let him pick out his own special big boy underpants. Just the 2 of us went out because it was a SPECIAL trip (this was a Sunday night and we started first thing Monday)
When we were home, I had him in regular underpants and he peed a LOT on the floor the 1st day. One time that day I managed to get him to the potty on time and he was SO proud of himself (and he got a sticker).
The second day, we did the same thing... put regular underpants on him when he got dressed, and I think we made it 3 times to the potty. Each time he made it, he got a sticker.
By day 3, something just "clicked", and he had 1 accident all day. Day 4, same thing. The few times I had to take him out during the week, he wore his underpants, and I brought along a change of clothes. He had 1 poop accident while we were in Stop & Shop, and got so upset, and it never happened again.
Not sure if this helps, but whenever DH had to pee, I sent DS into the bathroom with him. He has been peeing standing up right from the get-go.
Edited to add: One thing I have learned is that you cannot force them if they are not ready and if they regress, take a step back for a week or so and then start back up again. Until they are truly "ready", you cannot force them, and if you try to, it might backfire on you.
At night, he wears a Pull-up (he will be 4 in September). We have already talked about how when he turns 4, he has to start going on the potty at night too.
Sorry to hijack the original posters thread!

Re: Experience with Pull-Ups
My son will be 4 in October and only wears pull-ups at night. My daughter was fully trained during the day and night at 3 but he is not at night. I am not pushing him as I know eventually he will do it and I am not going to stress out over it.

Re: Experience with Pull-Ups
I started the pull ups right before DD hit 2. I started getting her used to the toilet at 18 months I would put her on and take her in the bathroom everytime I went. When I was home with her I would just put on underwear and put her on the toilet ever hour and let her sit there for about 5 minutes sometimes she went sometimes she didn't but I made a big deal everytime she was on. Yeah she had alot of accidents when we were home but she new cuz when she went in her underwear she owuld say I all wet. so I would jsut put a new pair of underwear on and say you have to tell mommy when you have to do p ee pee it took a while and alot of patients whenever we were out I had pull ups on her and would still try to keep the routine with getting her on aa toilet every hour if ppossible.
Now she is gonna be 3 in September and she is fully potty trained even at nite. She just started going to bed without any accidents.
It is time consuming and can get frusterating at times but you have to keep your cool and just go with the flow

Re: Experience with Pull-Ups
Pull ups are just like diapers..they absorb the pee, so they don't really make the child want to stop and go. At least not IME. Pampers makes "feel and learn" which makes a cold sensation when they go. Those might be better. Good luck!

We had the same experience with the Pull-ups. The underwear with plastic cover seemed to work much better for us.
