Explaining divorce to my 5 year old
I was just informed that one of my closest friends is on the way to a divorce. My DS thinks of her and her husband as "aunt" and "Uncle". Her husband is one of my son's favorite people. Now that we won't be seeing too much of him anymore or possibly ever again, I'm sure DS will question where Uncle -- is especially at my other son's christening next week. I'm planning on avoiding the topic as long as I can but when is it a good time to expain that Uncle - won't really be around anymore. (DS is about to turn 5) I actually feel that a loved one has died and am really devastated and shocked over the whole thing. We didnt see this coming at all.

Re: Explaining divorce to my 5 year old
My friend explained her divorce to her 4 year old as Daddy loves you but Daddy & Mommy don't want to be married anymore.
Now 2 years later, she's still trying to come up with an explanation as to why Daddy hasn't seen her in 18 months.
I also bought her a kid's book on divorce. I can ask her if she still has it if that would help you.
