Here's a link from Kellymom:
Benefits of Extended Nursing
I do give DS whole milk out of a sippy cup, too. He actually prefers that when we're out and about or if he's busy exploring something. He usually only nurses a few times a day. In my experience, it has been great -- when he's sick or not eating well because of teething I'm never worried becuase I know he's getting the nutrients he needs through breastmilk.

How many nursing sessions do they need at the age of 1 and beyond?

We never gave cows milk. We just nurse whenever. Pediatrican said it was fine and actually applauded me for still nursing. DC does eat cheese and yogurt. The link above is great and explains it all

Re: Extended BF MOms.. talk to me about the benefits of bfing past 1 year
I have tried cows milk, he won't take it.
He nurses usually 3, maybe 4 times a day.
I am shocked daily that I lasted this long.
He never really does it in public anymore.
Once at 6 AM
After lunch...1 ish
After dinner 7 ish
those are the main feedings. Its so much more flexible now though.
I am a believer in the benefits. Josh is sooooo secure in life. He goes with anyone, does anything....never cries. I don't know if it is the nursing, but I like to think it plays a role in it.
Still has never had an ear infection or stomach bug or anything like that. The only times he will feel sick is if I am sick as well....except for the time he caught rosela.
Of course, I don't have anything to compare his IQ with...but it helps me along to think I am making him smarter

I'm planning to BF beyond a year. I read that as long as you are BFing 3-4 times a day, there is no need for cow's milk.
Here is another link from kellymom on Nurtition for Nursing Toddlers. I found some helpful information in there.
One benefit that stuck with me from what I've read is that BFing helps fill in the nutritional gaps. But there are many benefits beyond that.
