Extra help over the summer?

I'm pretty sure my son is going to need some extra help over the summer with reading, maybe math too. My district cut the summer school program and I'm not sure what to do. I did sign him up for a half day camp which isn't really academic based, they do some work.

Where would I find a tutor? Or can anyone recommend a place? I know there is a Huntington Learning Center in Bay Shore.

Thanks! :)

I've heard that those learning centers are ridiculously expensive, and not all they are cracked up to be. Some colleges offer enrichment programs for kids. I know St. Joseph's College does a math and reading programs that you can also combine with a swimming program.

Thank you! I'll call St. Joe's. I called HLS and it's $195 for the eval and $60 per hour for the tutor.

I wish I was better at teaching him.

I asked DD's teacher for a recommendation to see if any of the teachers at the school wanted to make extra money. She recommended a teacher and we pay her $40 per hour.

Re: Extra help over the summer?

I plan on having my son read 2 books a day to me as he does now. I have a big box of sight words from Costco and plan on having him go through them and continue the words he reviews now. As for math, I have a few work books and he loves doing them. I planed on getting the first grade work book from Costco or Amazing Savings when they are available. I will sit with him for about an hour a day during the week to help him continue making progress. I also have a sticker chart for him. If he does well he get stickers and can get a prize after so many days of consistently reading and doing well in school.

I know a lot of people who use Bridges to Tomorrow for tutoring and are very happy with them.

ETA: that's where I refer my students who are in need of tutoring.

I have the Spring flyer and it is $205 for the 7 weeks from 9-10:20 am. The Summer is probably similar in pricing. The swimming add on is $105 and they go for 45 minutes. They don't have to do the swim program though.

Re: Extra help over the summer?

I would look into a SCOPE program in a neighboring district. They should be reasonable.

I just saw an ad for Mathnasium in the Suffolk Parent Guide. They have a few locations and a coupon for a free assessment.

Re: Extra help over the summer?

Are there any teachers in his school that tutor. Or ask his teachers if they know of anyone.

Re: Extra help over the summer?

Our camp has an option for kids to be pulled out for academic tutoring (extra fee). When I was a counselor I had kids who used it. Some of them were not behind in school but their parents wanted skills reinforced during the summer. I may have a tutor on weekends in the summer because I do not want my child to lose skills in summer. We will also participate in the library reading club and in an optional reading program through his school. I work with my son but I also bring a lot of my own work home & want him to have more.

Re: Extra help over the summer?

We have a tutor for DD who comes 2x a week now. With the help of her teacher and the reading specialist at the school, I came up with a few activities to work on reading, spelling and writing. The tutor works with her 2 times a week for about 1.5 hours, I work with her about an hour a day the other 5 days of the week.

For the summer, I already asked the tutor if she can come 3 days a week for 2 hours.

The tutor we use is a local high school student who babysits for us some times. We pay her $10 per hour. DD is making great progress with this extra help, but our plan was that if it didn't we would ask a teacher from the school to tutor. Our school has a list of teachers who want to tutor, however they are about $40 per hour.

I'll work with DD the other days. The reason we have the tutor for part of the time is because sometimes DD responds better when I'm not the one constantly on her.

Out of curiosity, is she behind in class and that is why you have a tutor? Or you want to give her an extra edge?

Extra edge? Gosh no, I'm not that momChat Icon She was struggling and in Jan we decided to implement a more structured plan to address it.

The summer plan is to help her start out first grade more successfully-retain the skills she has worked so hard on and maybe front load a little of the 1st grade skills so she has an easier time in first.

lol, I was just wondering! I see many children being tutored at the library when we go, so I sometimes wonder if it's extra help or extra edge Chat Icon
