Extra Tiles for Floor and Backsplash
We are picking up the tiles this weekend for our new kitchen and I would like to buy some extra tiles in case something is wrong with a tile or we need to replace one down the line (for whatever reason).
The tiles for the floor are 12 in. by 12 in. and we need 80 square feet for the floor (it's a galley kitchen).
We are also doing a tile blacksplash - not sure how big the tiles are- but estimating 4 in. by 4 in. We need 23 square feet for the backsplash.
How many extra tiles of each would you buy? TIA!

You'll always need one more than what you bought...
I would probably keep 2-3 of the floor tiles, and maybe 4-8 of the wall tiles.

Rule of thumb is 10% over what you need. So if you have 80sf of tile, you want to have 88s.f. of tile or 9 extra pieces.

It should be 8 extra pieces if it's 10%.
That would be 2.3sf for the smaller tile, meaning about 21 of the smaller tiles (9 4x4s for a square foot x 2.3, which is 10% of 23)
Seems like a lot, but like I mentioned, you always need one more than you have..... I've never had to replace 10% of the tiles in any of our rooms. I have 10% or more extra for my bathroom, but that's because I did it myself, and I wanted a bunch extra to practice with the cutting.
If they are cheap enough, it's not going to cause any problems buying 10% more.

Re: Extra Tiles for Floor and Backsplash
You're buying individual tiles? Not by the box?
We bought our tiles fot the backsplash by the box. We needed X boxes and naturally had some left over b/c we only needed a few out of that last box. If we were borderline, we'd have gotten another box...

We bought tiles individually and by the box for our backsplash. We bought a lot more than we needed to be safe and were able to return the extras we didn't use (we got them from Lowes).
