Extracurricular Activities: Harborfields/Northport Area
We recently moved to the area and our school-aged (8 and 5) daughters are looking to do extracurricular activities this coming fall/school year.
We would love your input on some great programs/studios/etc in the area.
Other than Girl Scouts, the girls haven't shown a huge interest in any particular activity. (The oldest has tried tennis, golf, and gymnastics and the youngest has tried dance). I would love for the girls to stay active but my oldest does not love sweating apparently. HA!
We are also members of the Huntington YMCA.

Re: Extracurricular Activities: Harborfields/Northport Area
There's "chorus" which is held at Stars of Tomorrow dance studio in Centerport which is run by the music teacher at WDPS.
Tennis lessons at Park Ave Tennis Club
Swimming lessons at the Y
Horseback riding lessons on Pulaski Rd (across from Walbaums shopping center)
Chris Gates Tae Kwan Do (Walbaums shopping ctr)
My DD's friend does theater, but I'm not exactly sure who it's through. I believe it's held down in the Elwood area at an elementary school on Little Plains. (I believe they're doing "Grease" for the summer program.)
Is your oldest signed up for any of the HACEF Booster Camps this summer?
And obviously soccer through the Northport or Harborfields leagues.

Re: Extracurricular Activities: Harborfields/Northport Area
We've done swimming at the YMCA. I debated signing my kids up for the sailing program that they offer but they're going boating instead (http://www.ymcali.org/www.ymcali.org/media/Huntington/flyers/2013-watefront-info-and-schedule.pdf )
The big sports in the area are soccer, gymnastics & sailing. Lacrosse is also a pretty popular sport.
You should consider getting a Huntington Rec Card through the Town of Huntington. They offer summer camps, vacation camp, courses throughout the year: http://huntingtonny.gov/content/13749/13843/15187/20370/19824/default.aspx - My friend has her dd in horseback riding through the town versus going through the stable at a signficant discount.
So far we've done, -Chris Gates Karate (Walbaum's Shopping Center) -it was great but the times didn't work out with my work schedule as they advanced. There are a lot of Harborfields kids in it too.
-Greenlawn Equestrian Center (across from Waldbaum's) - I really liked this for a summer program. When I mentioned that I was thinking of signing them up but would only have them there Mon-Thurs, they discounted the day off! I also like that they teached the kids how to truly care for horses, grooming, mucking out the stall, feeding them, etc. I know some moms were horrified over the kids having the muck the stall out during the feeding & care portion of the day but I'm not looking to raise a girl that hands over her horse to the stableboy to handle
-Cartooning classes at the Huntington Arts Council
Northport Youth Center Soccer League - Fall Registration is closed but you can see if they'll accept you on the waiting list. Wait List link. Fall is harder to get into than Spring. I suggest specifying a friend's coach & then writing "Car Pool Request, if possible" on the registration form after you're in for one season. I used to chair on the league & we try to honor the car pool requests if we can when we make up the teams. This is a recreational league. The more competitive one is the Cow Harbor League.
In addition to the Harborfields Booster programs, Northport offers some too: http://web.northport.k12.ny.us/files/401552/summer%20brochure%202013%20complete%20file.pdf.
Also check out your local library for programs. Harborfields
