I think you can, but would wind up with a lot of random stuff (say 100 tubes of toothpaste and no meat or milk, KWIM?). King Kullen doubles dollar coupons, Target has their own coupons on their site which you can use with manufacturer coupons for the same item.

There are stores that will double coupons in our area. I think extreme couponing can be done anywhere.

With some time and effort clipping coupons and looking for sales, you can get most toiletries (soap, shampoo, shaving cream, etc) and grocery items (cereal, ketchup, peanut butter, pasta, sauces, juice, etc) for free or nearly free.
Then your grocery bill will be cut down to only paying for meat, milk, and produce.

Re: Extreme couponing---can it be done in NY?
Many stores on LI double coupons. Most up to 99cents and KK does double $1. However there are many limitations. For example, at KK, you can only double 5 coupons total and only 2 of the same item. At Shoprite (who just started doubling coupons), you can only double 4 of the same items. You can make several trips if you have the time.
I think the fun of the show is seeing ppl make 1 BIG trip and pay SO little for it. You can be VERY successful with coupons in NY but I'm not sure Extreme Couponing can be done with all these limits.

IMO, no. I just got back from shopping and so many of my coupons weren't honored. DH pisses me off when he sees the commercial for that show. He says, "you should do that." Because I have 4-6 hours of free time to cut coupons surrrrrrre

Re: Extreme couponing---can it be done in NY?
Not that I came close to what they do on that show (or at least the promos I've seen), but I was able to do decent couponing in SoCal (65-75% of the bill), but never anything like that in NY.

Re: Extreme couponing---can it be done in NY?
I clip coupons every week, and honestly, most of what is offered are for products I wouldn't use, even if I could get them for free or nearly free.
I also think you probably have to have a lot of time on your hands, or make this your hobby to find really good deals.
I used to work for a company that was based in Buffalo and there were a couple people into extreme couponing, and seriously, it was like a 2nd job for them.
I also think they probably did better because COL up there was so much cheaper then it is on LI.

King Kullen doubles $1.00 up to 5 coupons.
Stop and Shop won't double $1.00 but they won't let you use more than 6 or 7 of the same coupon.
SO i think it would be very difficult to do what they do on that show.

Re: Extreme couponing---can it be done in NY?
no.. and it's for a number of reasons.
1) there are so many restrictions at different stores.. you'd have to split up your shopping trip into like 7 stops just to maximize your savings; and you'd have to split up your purchases to be able to get all of your coupons honored.
2) there are alot of things that I don't want to buy even if it's free
3) there are things I buy that aren't ever on sale and if they do go on sale, it isn't for a significant amount of of deduction
4)the cost of living (ie, groceries) here in NY is much more than in other parts of the country..

Re: Extreme couponing---can it be done in NY?
King Kull doubles $1, stop and shop has the dollar doubler coupons sometimes. Pathmark sometimes has triple coupons.
The most we've gotten pretty much free is bottles of soda, toothpaste, dental floss, shampoo and conditioner.
But it's usually a sale price plus the double coupons.

Re: Extreme couponing---can it be done in NY?
I think you could accumulate a lot of nearly-free stuff (stacking coupons and sales, working the CVS extra bucks system, etc) but you couldn't really "live" on this stuff, because you'd end up with weird random stockpiles-- 7 bottles of ketchup, 5 bottles of a particular shampoo, etc. Not really the way to feed a family.
If you just enjoy the fun of hunting down the deals, I could see turning it into a volunteer project and trying to load up on stuff like this for as little as possible, and then donating the groceries to food pantries, the toiletry stuff to women's shelters etc.
