Eye Dr rec- difference between opthamologist and optometrist?
Looking for an eye doctor who will check the health of my eye & also check my prescription for glasses and contacts. I live in Queens/Western Nassau border so anywhere around there is fine.
When I tried calling to make an appt with a new Dr, they told me he does not check contact prescriptions because he is an optometrist (will only check the health of the eye) so I would like a doctor who can do it all- Do they exist?

Eye Dr rec- difference between opthamologist and optometrist?
An opthomologist is an eye DOCTOR. They do a thorough exam checking the eye more in depth then an optometrist. When I see the opthomologist the claim gets put through my health insurance not my vision coverage. An optomoetrist goes through my vision benefit.

Ophtamologist is an MD.
They can do eye surgery, etc
Optometrist is trained but not an MD
They can't do surgery
They are good enough for basic eye exams, contacts, glasses etc
But if they find a bigger issue with your eyes, they would have to refer you to an Opthamologist.

I only see an optometrist and I wear glasses and contacts. Mine is in Forest Hills and she's pretty good.

My sister is an OPTOMETRIST and she is a DOCTOR. She went to medical school, can write prescriptions for eye infections etc, she is even certified in laser surgery. Just wanted to make that clear. 
She chooses not to do surgery, and will refer out with anything she is not comfortable with.

Optomitrist is and O.D - theygo to college then 4 years of optomotry school. They get an OD.
Opthomologists are MDs. They go to med school then 3 yr residency and maybe a fellowship.
An optomitrist should be able to do basic eye check (gloucoma, etc), and fit for contacts and glasses. Some do both some will only fit for glasses. You can see them under vision plan if you have one.
We don't so I see and prefer an opthomologist.
If you just want glasses an optomitrist is fine but I like the MD for a full check up. I have bad vision though.

She is an OD? They are doctors of optometry but not doctors of medicine.
To the OP they should be able to write a script and treat an eye issue as they spend 4 years studying the eye. Not sure about surgery.

Yes she will.
She checked my old prescription and wrote a new one. She does charge $50 for the new script, while the exam is covered by insurance.

I go to Long Island Eye Care. I used to go to the office in Rockville Centre on 165 N. Village. Now I go to the office on South Oyster Bay Rd in Hicksville. I see Dr. Paolini as she is the only doctor in the Hicksville office that also does contact lens fittings. She is an opthamologist. I pay my regular copay for the visit, and and extra $35 for the contact lens fitting. There used to be a different doctor there that I saw, so I only saw Dr. Paolini for the first time recently, but she does a VERY thorough eye exam. I've been wearing glasses for over 20 years and never had someone check out my eyes quite so thoroughly.
