facebook/internet discussion
I got into an interesting discussion with a friend this weekend over pictures i had posted on Facebook..
I posted a picture of a place i had visited in Boston in my 'random stuff' album.. I happened to be looking at my DH's facebook page with him, and we noticed that someone he is friends with (i'm not friends with this person) had taken the picture from my album and posted it on their page. It then had a link to my album next to it.
Firstly, i was annoyed that this person had taken my picture and posted it as their own. But, more importantly i was slightly surprised at how someone i'm not friends with on facebook could've seen my pictures in the first place. I thought i had set all the privacy settings to be accessible only to my friends. I immediately went into the privacy settings and after digging around a bit, realized that my picture settings were for friends, and their friends. So, i changed it and am hoping that its a bit more secure now.
I'm normally a pretty private person, i only accept 'friends' on facebook from people i'm actually friends with and i don't just accept any request from anyone just because we might've gone to the same school 20 years ago..
So, i guess what i'm getting at is that i felt sort of violated that my picture was so easily accessible to anyone. Doesn't help that i didn't like the person who got my picture in the first place
It's almost made me want to remove all my pics on there - i really really don't like the idea that all this stuff is so easily seen by anyone. I'm careful not to post anything inappropriate or incriminating, but still, i don't like the idea of my life being seen by people that i don't chose to show it to..
anyone else feel like this? or am i just old and crotchety?

Re: facebook/internet discussion
i tend to agree with you - it's fine to want to keep in touch with actual friends, but i personally don't like it when friends of friends can see what's going on in my life - sometimes they are people i have chosen NOT to be friends with on purpose, KWIM?
and that is weird that he "stole" your pic - why would someone do that?

I don't think he 'stole' your picture, especially since it had a link to your name/page next to the picture. Doing it without your knowledge is a little weird.
I guess I'm a little nonchalant about it because when I signed onto Facebook the first time I made sure I knew who could see what. IMO it's everyones own responsibility to check their own things.
My MIL swears she didn't create an account for FB, but she has one. She swears that someone else filled in her information. I keep reminding her that nobody knows what year she was born and graduated but her and my FIL. It doesn't matter though, it's out there.

Yup. It's why I don't participate in any of these web sites. They do nothing to enhance friendships I already have and if I were so interested in meeting up with people I knew 20 years ago, I'd find another way to get in touch with them...

I initially thought the same thing - i was never interested in MySpace and I don't care about all the stupid applications on FB, however it has been a way for me to keep in touch with people that I don't necessarily talk to all the time, but would like to. Friends that are in other countries and in other parts of the country - we chat all the time over silly things that i may not have done via email. My friend in Spain was initially the one who got me on FB in the first place, just for that purpose.
I may tire of it eventually, i'm just not interested in letting the world know my every move and i don't think they're interested

Re: facebook/internet discussion
Sometimes I feel over exposed... but it's VERY easy to put people into categories, so people in diff categories can see diff things. I think the provacy settings are actually really good.

Re: facebook/internet discussion
As you know, I post a lot of pics on FB, but they are only accessible to my friends. However, I have to make sure I do that with every album, because the same thing happened to me. I had posted pictures of some friends and their son visiting our house, and the next day, I saw that our friend's sister had made her own album of those pics...it really annoyed me! I am very careful now.
(oh, and I know not to tag any pics of you anymore )
ETA: this just prompted me to check all of my privacy settings, and I realize that there were a few albums that were not limited to just friends- oops!
