He's management / supervisory level.

I saw a great spot like this open for Brookhaven Lab. Is that too far for him?

sure - take a look at their site. I saw this one plus others posted that may be of interest.
Brookhaven National Lab
For some odd reason I can't insert the link to the job itself but on the site above hit CTRL F to find job #15338. It is the Facility Complex Manager position I was referring to but there are others there as well.
Also, I know a number of the school districts are hiring too.
