Factors in choosing a Pediatrician

Aside from general rapport with the doc, and they answered all of your questions satisfactory-- what were the ultimate things that made you choose one over another?

We had our first interview today, and was just wondering how others made their final decisions.

Re: Factors in choosing a Pediatrician

I chose the practice Idid for multiple reasons:

In no particular order:

1) Proximity to my home

2) Proximity and affilitation with the closest and only local hospital I would consider for my child.

3) We had the same stance on vaccinations.

4) Recommendations from 3 separate sets of parents who did NOT know each other and all use the practice

5) Gut instinct.

Interestingly enough, #5 is the best reason IMO.

Im using the ped that i was brought to as a kid..(and hes not even close to retirement lol) i went to him, my 14 year old nephew, my 10 yo DS..and now my lil girl will see him too..
hes incredible, and although i live in lindenhurst and hes in east rockaway, i wouldnt see anyone else..EVER..he has become like a part of our family..

i agree with leslie in that the "gut instinct" is usually the most important!!

Re: Factors in choosing a Pediatrician

1.) Close to our house.

2.) Recommended by friend.

3.) The hours. They are open M-F 9A-11P and prefer you go there before the ER.

4.) Open weekends 9A-4P

5.) Affiliated with several of the best children's hospitals on LI.

6.) Will come to my hospital after I deliver.

7.) Practice consists of multiple doctors, but still I have a choice too of my primary.

8.) Good recs from strangers I met there.

Re: Factors in choosing a Pediatrician

I agree with what everyone else said. I also wanted the doctors in the practice to be young enough that my child will be able to grow up and still have the same doctors. If you start with a practice where the doctors are in their 60's for example they will most likely retire and then you have to start all over.

If they were covered by my insurance, location, and if I felt comfortable...

I wanted to add that I did not want a large practice. I wanted my kids to see one doctor.

Re: Factors in choosing a Pediatrician

In addition to what others said, I also look to whether or not they have a separate well and sick area to wait.
