family room flooring
We are redoing our family room and I want to replace the flooring- currently very old carpet.
I need suggestions. I have an in line high ranch so this is not a basement but the 1st floor of my house. My kids will be using it primarily for playing/tv/art projects etc but I don't want it to be just a playroom. I would like it to be somewhere that we could also have guest over.
Would you do wood, tile or new carpet?
The rest of my house is entirely hardwood.

I hate carpet as well. I have bamboo floors, love them and love the fact they are a sustainable product.
Tile would be my second choice, never carpet.

Re: family room flooring
Id do tile
I love hardwood but if you're going to use it as a play room it's easier to clean tile and wood might get scratches

Re: family room flooring
We just redid our den. We were going to do wood but because we have a large fish tank down there we were worried about it leaking. We ended up doing vinyl wood plank flooring. We love it. It looks like wood but is more durable

Thank you for the responses! Does anyone have experience with laminate versus wood as far as wear and tear? My husband is leaning more towards laminate and thinks it will be easier to maintain than wood flooring. I think I prefer real wood since the rest of our house has wood floors.

I use vinyl flooring that looks like wood in our bedrooms and it's great. Inexpensive and holds up very well. My aunt has had it in her family room for years and it looks great.

We just did this. Canco's tile had a huge selection.

Re: family room flooring
I'm going to say carpet. We have the same plan for our family room and put in carpet. We will be spending lots of time sitting on the floor with my ds playing, and I find carpet much more comfortable for that sort of thing. We have hard wood in the rest of the house though, pretty much. Go with a bold carpet and make it a fun space!

We have pergo and i.love it. It takes a beating and keeps on going. We have carpets in the bedrooms only and I hate them. I.like wood with an area rug if need be.

I like carpet for a family room too. We are always on the floor with my DS and it's much more comfortable. When we go to my in laws and play on the floor it's murder on our knees because they have hard wood flooring.

Re: family room flooring
I did high end luxury vinyl tile. It's a click and lock system, so no glueing, looks like tile. Extremely durable and weather resistant, plus does not need special treatment underneath if a moist area. LOVE it for a family room, with a throw rug over it.

I like carpet for a den. It feels more warm and homey to me. We have carpet in our den and the kids bedrooms. The rest of the house is hardwood.

Re: family room flooring
We had a similar situation and replaced old carpet with new.
I couldn't put down wood flooring (it's on a slab). If I put down wood tile (or any other kind of tile), I had no idea what to do with the stairs.
Not my top pick, but it works.

Wood with area rug
I agree or as others suggested, porcelain wood-like tiles.

Re: family room flooring
We stuck with carpet because its on a slab (only part of our house on one) and even though my husband said we could do wood no problem if we prepped it right, I felt like carpet would be better for my kids playing...this is our main floor play area and I wanted it to be comfortable for my kids...we figure in a few years we can change it out for the price we paid (we went with a stock carpet from Lowes).

I would pick wood. Tile is too hard. Carpet will be harder to clean.
