Father's Day & DH - a small vent
So, neither my father or DH's is alive. Sunday marks DH's 3rd Father's Day as a dad. Every year I try to make it special, and invariably he throws a monkey wrench into the works (he does the same thing with his b-day and Christmas), but this year TAKES THE CAKE!!
First he casually mentions he loves the NY Times, but says he won't order it due to the cost. So I think - great, I'll order the Times for him as a gift to start on Father's Day. I do this, and two days later he tells me he ordered it at some special for 12 weeks. So, I cancel the order, as his has already started (this would be the reason he mentioned it ).
So, then I figure I'll take him to the King Tut exhibit in NYC which he's dying to go see. He turns around and tells his mom he wants to take her and makes plans - date and all - to go with her.
Next up - the Mattituk Strawberry Festival. I think, hey, last year we didn't get to go because of the weather, this year it will be fun. He calls me and tells me his family wants us to join them for dinner on Father's Day, BUT he doesn't want to go b/c he wants to go to . . . you guessed it - the Strawberry Festival! So either way, I'm not "taking him" for Father's Day.
And finally - the cherry on top . . . DH is playing with DD after dinner and he says to her . . . tomorrow we're going to take your picture with the cute ponytail in your hair b/c daddy needs a new picture for his desk. It took every ounce of strength I had not to throw something at him. Each and every Father's Day I have gotten him a photo collage - and this year is no different. DD had an awesome photo shoot with Heather from Forever Fireflies. I swear if he does anything more than take his own pictures tomorrow I will hit him with a baseball bat.

Well....at least you are really in tune with things he would like. It would be nice if he would just not do anything out of the ordinary around occasions where he would receive gifts. I'm sorry he's making this so tough for you.

Re: Father's Day & DH - a small vent
have you ever discussed how this makes you feel? I don't know but maybe your DH has trouble wth father's day b/c he lost his...
I'm sure if you express your good intentions and how it makes you feel that he always blindsides you (not intentional) he will understand.
I say just give him money and explain that he always thinks of it AFTER you do =))))
then tell him that he has the option to direct the day =))))
hang in there...

Re: Father's Day & DH - a small vent
DH did this all the time! Within one month of his birthday, Christmas or fathers day he always ordered exactly what I was going to order. I finally snapped and told him he needed to stop buying himself stuff right before 'holidays' or he was getting nothing.
Then this year I knew he wanted the Omaha Steaks special they were running for Fathers Day. I was slowly using up things we had in the freezer to make room for the order. Then last week he comes home with a Costco box of frozen pretzels. That's not a tiny box. I had to dismantle the box and shove individual pretzels in freezer bags to make them all fit. Not one inch of room in the freezer now.
I am sure you could imagine my face.

my DH is the same way. before his bday, xmas u name it..he'll get the urge to go shopping for something that someone has already bought him.
For fathers day I got him the new season of Curb Your enthusiasm. I knew it was out and figured he didn't b/c he would have mentioned it. yesterday we were doing shopping in walmart and he comes over with it.."LOOK WHATS OUT" . I was so annoyed b/c I had wanted to go shopping by myself that nite to get it done fast, but he has to come along.
I can never surprise him..

You know how much I love your DH, but I'd get the bat out to have it handy.
