Re: Favorite NON DISNEY Florida vacation with kids
Naples & Ft Lauderdale
We've been many times with kids to Ft L & it's cheap to rent an apartment there. We do pool, Polynesian restaurant (so much fun), pirate bar (with some of the best food), pirate cruises (and such), Everglades (yes, our kids liked it better than Disney once), beach & more beach. Our kids adore it there.
The last 2 times we went to Florida, we ended up in Naples. It was heaven on Earth: sand dollar sand bar at beach, Dolphins swimming around you, amazing botanical gardens, cute restaurants, Ft Meyers area with pirate cruise, fishing boats.
We never stay in Disney: we usually spilt it up with Ft Lauderdale or Naples & have the best relaxing & exciting vacation with a day or 2 in parks & most of the day's relaxing at the beach & sights!

We absolutely love this place!!! It's small enough to walk around and just feels like home. Rooms are amazing and with all the activities, my kid actually enjoyed this resort more than the parks. We're hoping to go back next year.

We loved our vacation at St Pete Beach. Our resort had so much to do and we also went to the aquarium and Busch Gardens.

We have been here a few times, and love it!! BUT, our last trip we had a huge ant problem in our villa, and we were on the top floor. It was so annoying! But, aside from that, we love the pools, the planned activities, the mini golf (I would get a length of stay pass for it), the campfires, etc.
You can often find this resort being rented on Ebay for much cheaper than through Marriott.

Vero beach resort and spa. We go here ALL the time. Right on the ocean, beautiful, small resort, good food, and service. Plus the Disney Vero hotel is a few miles away, and have gone there for character breakfasts or meals without having to stay there.
Also enjoy the JW Marriott / Ritz in Orlando. Both hotels share the property. They have the best lazy river and pool at JW. Also like the Ritz in W. Palm area. I believe it's now called Eau palm beach. We've had a few really nice beach getaways there.

We have been to Clearwater and had a blast. The sand is like flour, and the water is blue and clear. They show movies at Pier 60 on certain nights. We drove up the coast a bit to Indian Rocks beach, we did mini golf, etc. The Clearwater Marine Aquarium is also there. So if you have a fan of the movie Dolphin Tale, that would be a great stop. The props location downtown is also really cool. Keep in mind it's a rescue, rehab minded place, not an actual aquarium like you see at say Riverhead. My DD LOVED it since she is a HUGE Winter (and Hope) fan.
The Tampa museum of Science and Industry is fine also. We did that before our plane ride home. They have a cute children's building.

Totally agree on Clearwater Beach. My parents live there for part of the year and I would never go back to the East Coast after being there...the beach is so family friendly! The water is calm and warm!
