Favorite Thanksgiving dish AND recipe...
It's my 1st year hosting in my new house. I have a few recipes but I thought it might be nice to get some new ideas. I'd love a recipe for homemade cranberry sauce if anyone has one

Its nothing special, but I really like the recipe that comes on the back of the package of cranberries. Homemade cranberry sauce is SO MUCH better than canned

Re: Favorite Thanksgiving dish AND recipe...
ITA about the homemade cranberry sauce...no comparison IMO
My favorite is this butternut squash casserole which can also be made with sweet potato. It has a quiche like quality about it and is delish and super easy to make, enjoy
Amazing Butternut Squash Recipe from allrecipes.com Prep Time: 20 Minutes Cook Time: 40 Minutes Ready In: 1 Hour Yields: 6 servings
INGREDIENTS: 1 butternut squash- peeled, seeded and cubed 1/2 cup mayonnaise 1/2 cup finely chopped onion 1 egg, lightly beaten 1 teaspoon brown sugar salt and pepper to taste 1/4 cup crushed saltine crackers 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese 1 tablespoon butter, melted
DIRECTIONS: 1.Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). 2.In a large pot, bring the squash to boil. Reduce to a simmer until squash is soft. 3.In a large bowl, mash the softened squash. Mix in the mayonnaise, onion, egg, brown sugar, salt and pepper. Pour the mixture into a 2 quart baking dish. 4.In a medium bowl, mix together crackers, Parmesan and butter. Sprinkle over the squash mixture. 5.Bake uncovered in the preheated oven for 35 to 45 minutes, until the topping is lightly brown.
I used 1 very large butternut squash and doubled all the ingredients to make 2 pyrex pie plates. I also quadrupled the recipe for the crumble on top. One cup of crushed saltines, 4 tablespoons of parmesan, and 4 tablespoons of melted butter. This way it covers the entire top of the dish.

Re: Favorite Thanksgiving dish AND recipe...
My favorite cranberry recipe is so easy. Follow the directions for making cranberry sauce on the back of the fresh berry package. When its cool, add crushed pineapple( I eyeball it. You can add how much you like). Also add chopped toasted walnuts.( I eyeball this as well. Enough to have some walnut with each bite) Refrigerate till cold. I make this a day or two in advance gets even better with time. So good and easy.

Re: Favorite Thanksgiving dish AND recipe...
I don't love thanksgiving food, but I do always eat the stuffing and sweet potatoes (my sister makes it with the marshmallows and pecans on top).
my sister's stuffing is amazing. it has sausage in it, I think. It's pretty rich but so tasty. Let me know if you want the recipe.
Also, stuffed mushrooms as an app. I had some recently that were pretty awesome.

I will ask her for the recipe this week. I can tell you for sure it has an obscene amount of butter. It's really rich, but amazing!

Re: Favorite Thanksgiving dish AND recipe...
Jess - if "Egg" doesn't get you the recipe I can give you mine that has sausage and apples in it.
Also, besides the awesome stuffed mushrooms I have a great appetizer recipe made with phyllo dough and havarti cheese. I know you can't partake but it is impressive and everyone loves it.
I also have a squash casserole recipe that I could eat all by myself. You might get to taste it soon. :)
Also, cook the turkey upside down. It really does make a difference.

Re: Favorite Thanksgiving dish AND recipe...
This is the one I use for delicious pumpkin bread. Great to serve with dinner (or I like to add choc chips to 1 loaf and serve with dessert!) Makes 2 loaves.
Ingredients:
·3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour ·2 teaspoons baking soda ·1 teaspoon baking powder ·3 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice ·1 teaspoon salt ·3 cups white sugar ·1 cup vegetable oil ·4 eggs ·1 (15 ounce) can pumpkin puree ·1/2 cup water
I usually add a bit of cinnamon & nutmeg as well. Very moist!
DIRECTIONS 1.Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease two 9x5 inch loaf pans. Sift together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and pumpkin pie spice. Set aside.
2.In a large bowl, beat together sugar, oil, eggs, and pumpkin. Stir in flour mixture alternately with water. Divide batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake in the preheated oven for 60 to 70 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Wrap in plastic wrap to keep fresh.

Do you think I can make this the night before, and add the cheese & put in oven for 10 min on Thursday?

ITA w/the caranberry sauce recipe on the back of the cranberries bag.
Another "nothing special", fave Thanksgiving dish - mashed parsnips. Chop, boil, and mash with butter and milk. Yummy! Same goes for turnips!
