Featured houses in Newsday

How do these houses get picked? And do you think it helps in the sale of a house?

They are probably paid for by the broker/agency. They really dont help out with the sale.

Last year our co-op in the city was listed on Channel 5 for the deals of the week series they were airing. They chose a different price range every week and show you the best finds in NYC. I can tell you it DIDNT HELP US ONE BIT. And it was just luck that we got on, OUr brokers closest friend worked for the TV network and got our broker the hook-up for any of his listings in the price range.

I'm thinking the people who list them pay extra to be listed here.

Yes, it's a paid advertisement.

As far as helping... I don't think it could hurt. Marketing is marketing.

But I know that a lot of real estate companies choose not to spend marketing dollars on print advertising (at least not in local papers), because research shows it is not very effective. Real estate companies put most of their money toward online marketing. The overwhelming majority of buyers start their searches online, so a strong internet presence is really the key.

Also, I think the fact that the real estate section of papers used to be a big section, and now it's a couple of pages during the week and a small section on Sunday. So I think that speaks to the current relevance of newspaper advertising (at least compared to the pre-internet era).
