Feedback on BOCES ECC Levitown
They called us today and set up a screening for May2nd. That is their first availabe appointment. Unforunately I may have to make a decision before than because I will be done touring schools next week and the spots are few and far between and I dont want to lose a spot while waiting to screen DS there, KWIM? I wonder if they would let me at least tour the school beforehand?
Does anyone have any basic knowledge of the program?
ETA: Do they offer integrated classes?

Re: Feedback on BOCES ECC Levitown
my son went there for 2 years plus summers. We loved them. They do have integrated classes since they share space with the Island trees universal pre-K program. Its a very different set up than the "private" special ed. preschools though. all their classes are basically 2 classes in one room. so if you get a 10-1-2 class, you will have 20-22 kids, 2 teachers (one certified as special ed, and one certified as speech) and 4 assistants. by the time my son went there (he was at little village for a year prior) he needed most of his help with pragmatic speech... how to talk to other kids, and the larger class size was something he benefited from greatly. He made a ton of progress while he was there and was completely mainstreamed for K. if you have any specific questions, FM me. Oh, and i had a tour of the school by the person who did the evals, and had a second one with the principal because i wanted to go see the place a second time. Bonnie Heller is the principal, she's great and very available if you need anything.

I spoke with the asst principal today and she told me they didn't have integrated classes, the kids in the classes all had delays/disabilities.
The only thing I don't care for with the BOCES model is it's not individual therapy sessions, it's all push-in. Im so confused.

that is what i LOVE about BOCES... because most of the time they are on 30 min sessions in CPSE and the timer starts the minute the teacher walks into the class to get the child.
so if therapy is from 1-1:30 M-W-F, therapist will walk in at 1 get child, and if said child has 15min temper tantrum, that counts as part of their 1/2 hour. so therapists gets child to walk out of door by 1:15, starts to take child to therapy room, child has another tantrum for 10min, 25 min of therapy is now done, teacher then takes child to class.
in push in, therapy is timed as well, but not as rigid. its like them going to gym class, and in BOCES, speech is 5x weekly all day

One of the teachers in the room is certifies in speech. so there is a speech person in the room the entire time the child is there. the language is worked on in a group setting that way, as opposed to 1 on 1 pull out sessions. it was really what my son needed, he had the words and the clarity, but not the ability to talk conversationally with other kids or adults at the time.
as for the integrated, unless something has changed in the last couple of years, my son was in their integrated class. its not a full integration though, they mix the kids with the island tree preschool classes which are held in the same building. so they spend time with them, but not all day every day. it was classified as integrated when my son was there. but he's in 2nd grade now.
