Feeding Question...I'm so confused!

I tried BF alone, but DS wasn't gaining his weight back so the Ped wanted me to supplement. Ok, easy enough...I BF and then 3 times a day I would also add 2-4 oz of formula. DS gained the weight back, then the Ped said I could cut back on the formula. This didn't work because once I was done BFing, DS would be sucking his hands like crazy and trying to move down to my breast. I really don't think my supply is that great, I've pumped a few times to check it out and it's about 2-3 oz. So I'm adding formula, but my question is...how much? I've been giving him 4 oz after BFing for 3-4 feedings a day. But I still don't feel like he's satisfied. DS is almost 6 weeks old. Is there a guideline on how much they should generally have at a feeding? Maybe I'm getting stuck on the fact that the Avent bottles (newborn) are 4 oz so I feel like it's not supposed to be more than that...I don't know, but this is making me crazy! Thanks guys!

Re: Feeding Question...I'm so confused!

My ped always said feed on demand, as much as she wants. I know it is hard when you are ebf, I only pumped so was able to measure.

I just increased the ounces everytime it seemed like she was still hungry.

I never had a problem with her not stopping when she was full.

Re: Feeding Question...I'm so confused!

We are going through same thing basically and my ped said on demand until DD is satisfied, which worked out to one or two ounces after she nursed. It was a good quick fix b/c she gained 1 lb in 9 days!

If you're child is getting too much, you'll know b/c they'll spit up. However, 4oz after he's already BF seems like a lot if you figure a stricly Formula fed baby would only be getting 4 oz total. I've met w/ an LC b/c I want to get my supply up so we don't have to supplement anymore. What did your ped say about how much to give?

I'd say if he's hungry let him eat. My mom said my little brother took 8 oz bottles, never 4 so each kid eats different

Are you giving him a total of 4oz of formula in addition to BFing 3-4 times a day? If so, that does not seem like alot for 6 weeks old. If you are trying to give him 4oz AFTER the BFing "session", yes that seems like alot. When DD was 6 weeks, she was taking 4oz of pumped BM at every feeding, usually 5 times a day. My ped said that spitting up is not necessarily a sign that the baby has eaten too much. He said that babies just do that. If the spitting up is a large amount or if it is projectile, then it is a problem. HTH.

Re: Feeding Question...I'm so confused!

Thanks guys! I BF feed every 2-3 hours, and for 3 or 4 of those feedings, I'm also giving him 4 oz of formula....so about 16 oz of formula a day plus BFing. My mom said we took about 6 oz at a feeding around this time, so I think we're ok....I just don't want to overdo it. He's hardly spitting up, so that's good too. I'll keep doing this and then check with the ped next week. Thanks again!!

The same thing happened to me. I ended up having to give DS formula all the time. He wasn't gaining weight and my supply was practically nothing. I would get 2 oz at most.

DS is 7 weeks old and has been on 5 ounces for 2 weeksChat Icon Sometimes he even has as much as 7 ounces. I stopped using the 4 oz bottles because it made me think that is only what he should be having. I feed him until he is satisfied.
