Feel like I am selling myself short.
I have been out of the work force since the end of April 2007 (maternity leave) and at the end of my leave, when my old job could not accommodate my need for 30hrs for a month, I officially resigned.
I have been actively looking for work the past 2 1/2 months and been on a handful of interviews.
I applied and interviewed at Target- was offered a job, but feel like I am selling myself short.
I have NO problem with working there (actually think I will quite enjoy it), but afraid I would not bring home enough money to make much of a difference (after paying for childcare).
I am also concerned b/c DS' daycare is M-F and I'd need to find someone to watch him on Saturdays that I'd work, which is REALLY stressing me out.
DH says, "It's better than no job"
I did interview for a job which sounded like I MAY get, but the Dr (who I interviewed with) is OOT for another week. Said "I'll call and give you an offer when I return"
What would YOU do????

Re: Feel like I am selling myself short.
hmm.. personally, if it were me, I would look for positions in doctor's, dentist's offices near your home. What about a bank teller position? I would want something that doesn't require overtime with minimal weekend hours.

I have been doing this, I've emailed resumes in response to job postings, but more often than not I do not near anything. I think if I've sent out 20 resumes I've rec'd 4 calls/interviews. That does not include the one temp agency I went to (and have heard nothing from).
I want to mail out my resume to offices/banks/etc, but not sure where to start with that.

Re: Feel like I am selling myself short.
Would you maybe consider going in person to some banks and speaking with the manager about any openings?

I agree I have been doing this too because i have not been getting anywhere with the job hunting. In the last 2 months I have send out 60 resumes and maybe 6 responses. I was told that because the unemployment rate is so bad there are not enough jobs out there for everyone. Also if there is a job opening there are probably hundreds of people applying for the same job so you have to take that to light too. I am just getting fed up but I don't want to go too low but if I have to I would. Right now I am just looking everywhere part and full time.

The doctor said "I will give you an offer when I get back"? Sounds like you got the job then - he / she said "offer"....

Do you have to go back to work right now? I personally wouldn't settle for just any old job, especially if all my $$$$ was going straight to child care.

I am 90% sure he said "offer". See, he asked what I was looking for money-wise. I said "ideally I'd like XX,XXX" He calculated to figure the hourly rate and said "That's a little high, considering this is an assistant position" He then went on to say what the pay would be and didn't know if that would work for me. I said I'd have to discuss it with my husband, but felt it wasn't out of the question. To which he said was going OOT for just over a week and would get back to me the week after next (this was last week) and tell me what he could offer, or did he say tell me what he could do. Kinda sounded like an offer.

HAVE to, no. Especially in DH's eyes (I know, what mom/wife wouldn't want to hear this). But we desperately want to pay off debt and save for a house.
I am not trying to settle, but trying to find the "right" job has been SO hard-- not only b/c times are hard now.

Have you tried Indeed.com? What were you doing at your old job?

Yes, tried indeed.com-
At my last job I was a Provider Recruiter for a managed care (vision) company. I did such a variety of jobs in addition to just calling providers to get them to join our network. It's so hard to sum that job up into a "resume" paragraph.

Re: Feel like I am selling myself short.
I would hold on giving an answer to Target until the doctor comes back in town. Then at least you can make a sound decision but it seems like you got the job in the Dr's office.

Re: Feel like I am selling myself short.
if you have office experience I would not take a retail job. they can be very inflexible esp during the holiday season, which is right around the corner.
just thinking about dealing with customers face to face gives me hives I worked in retail a lot when I was in school, never again!!! not unless it was a position in the office of a retail establishment.

I agree. My mother works in retail. She is uppermanagement and even she cannot control her hours. They are awful, and even when she works 70 hours a week she only gets paid for 40. During October through Feb she is not allowed to take any time off. This is the policy for the whole store.

Re: Feel like I am selling myself short.
Good points from the other posters!!
I also cringe at the thought of some little snot-bag teenager or college freshman being in charge of me in the hierachy of things which is what I picture it to be like in a retail environment.
I am sure working at Target and being around the general public is probably not a walk in the park by any means.

Re: Feel like I am selling myself short.
Thank you ALL for your thoughts. I thought LONG and hard about this decision.
I had the Target interview on a Monday, rec'd a call Wed to goto orientation on Thur. I went Thur and saw the schedule they had for me- um, they apparently did not LOOk at my availability and put me on for 2 nights I cannot work at night. The person doing the orientation changed it w/o any problems. As well, I told her the next two weeks I can ONLY do M-F days- she said okay yo that too. HOWEVER, those accomodations are ONLY being made during my training period.
I decided just to take this job until something else comes along. I had worried about what if I get a call for an interview elsewhere and I scheduled to work- I decided I'll make it work somehow. So for now I'm employed at Target.
