Fence or gate to block off outside stairs...updated with pic to give a better idea

So our block party is sat and now DH decides we need to block off an outside staircase b/c there will be kids running around. It is in the front of the house - but it is one where it starts in the driveway and the stairs go down to the basement so one side of the stairs is up against the house and the other side you have to go down several steps before there is anything to hold onto - so there isn't a wall on both sides to put up a temporary gate. Any suggestions - I doubt we can get an estimate and someone to put in a small fence and gate before Sat.

What about those "odd" shape gates they make for the inside.

Ohhhh - do they have to be mounted though? There is brick and concrete on the one wall - and only about a 6 inch wall on the other side
