Ferberizing
DS has gone from being an amazing sleeper to waking several times a night and staying awake for a couple of hours during one of those wakings. After much thought and realizing that we can't continue to function with so little sleep we have decided to try the Ferber technique. I was just curious about how many nights it took before seeing results. Also, how long on average your child cried. I know every child is different, but I just want to get an idea of other people's experiences. TIA.

Re: Ferberizing
I wouldn't say we "ferberized" DS (mainly b/c I only really know the principles and didn't do a lot of research) but my ped told us no bottles between 11pm and 5am to get him to eat more during the day (and to get him to sleep through the night)
Do you give DS a pacifer? Because that is what helps us, I go and pop it in before he has a chance to wake up and he falls back to sleep. We had one bad night where I broke down and gave him water in a bottle b/c he was screaming so much, but besides that it has been pretty good.

We do sometimes use a pacifier, but Ferber suggests that it is another "crutch" to help him sleep and that ultimately he needs to learn to fall back asleep on his own. So, we are not going to use that technique anymore. It is just all so confusing. You think you are doing the right thing, but it seems as if it just confuses the situation more.

Re: Ferberizing
We don't do Ferber, but we do what we refer to as controlled crying, we go in in the beginning, and then we let him cry. To be honest, most of the time he will put himsellf back to sleep in 5-10 minutes, but a few times he has cried for up to an hour. He isn't so much crying as yelling. Telling us he wants to be out of the bed.
I think the thing to do is to remember that your baby is safe in his room and he is just protesting going to sleep. You can stop him crying at any time, you make the decision. Also, what helped me was to say I am only going to let him cry for 25 minutes TOPS, and if he cried for that long, we would stop. The thing about this method is that its not a one time thing, we have to do this everytime there is a major change in his schedule/life....so for instance after our recent trip to the states his sleep pattern is all shot to hel.l, but we are getting there.
Good Luck!
