Ferel cat problem- I think it needs to be put down
I have 3 ferel cats living on my property. They dont bother me, I dot bother them.
the other day they were sunning themselves on my driveway. As I got in the car and drive they scattered to the edge of the driveway. One of them is VERY VERY injured. Its whole neck (from chin to shoulder) was missing hair, red/gross.
I have a few concernes.
1. was it attacked by an animal? 2. If it was, was the animal rabid? 3. I cant imagine that cat is going to survive an injury like that. The thought of it dying a horrible death is a little to much.
Is there anyone I can call? Humane society? Animal controll? I would liek it captured and "looked" at. And yes, if the injurys are too much have it put down. I would rather the poor thing be put down than die a horrible death.
Any thought?

Sounds like it could be mange. Did it actually have an injury or did it just look gross?

It LOOKED like there was no fur and the whole next was red/exposed.
I cant SAY it was an attack since I didnt get too close. But from far-ish away it LOOKED like it was attacked.
But yeah, cant say now for certain.
I cant imagine it would survice ANY attack/injury/mange like that, can it?

Poor kitty
Maybe try calling The Long Island Cat Project or Bobby and The Strays for some advice? That sounds more like mange than an attack though. I don't know that the cat would have to be put down. It could also be fleas, a skin disease, etc.

Mange can look really red/ bumpy and disgusting and causes hair loss

Try calling your town and see if they address the issue.

Also, if it was all bloody from an attack, by now the blood would be dry and more brown/black than red. Possibly flies and maggots and what not... The fur surrounding the injury would be stuck down and crusty from the blood.

Mange isn't really deadly. It's like scabies- a skin condition caused by mites. I think the real risk comes along with infection. I didn't see it of course, but from your description I don't think the cat was attacked or injured at all. As long as it doesn't become infected, it'll probably be fine, though itchy and possibly uncomfortable.

Ferel cat problem- I think it needs to be put down
We had the same exact issue arise a few years back with a feral/stray that used to hang out on our property. The whole side of her face was red, fur gone, just like you described. We waited a few days to see if it looked like it would heal up and to monitor the cats behavior. We noticed she was not as active, started losing weight, eyes looked glassy so we called a local vet. They had us trap her and bring her in and ultimately she had to be euthanized. Even though she wasn't our pet, it was a very difficult and sad experience. I don't know where you are located but we dealt A&A Veterinary Hospital in Franklin Square. They were really wonderful. From what I remember, I don't even think they charged us for their services.

A and A is a pretty decent vet, they used to do a lot of wildlife rescue. I dropped many a duck and seagull off there :O) They are much bigger than you think when they are pooping on the front seat of your car LOL

Thanks. I have not seen the cat in almost a week. If they are not "hanging out" I dont see them.
If I see it again Ill pay attention to her behavior. If it all looks bad Ill call A and A.
