Filing the 1st time home buyer credit
Did anyone buy a house in '09 and file an amended 2008 Tax Return? I tried to do it myself and am apparently incompetent and think I have to go to a tax guy. Anyone have better luck doing it on their own?

I just sent it to the tax man too. I didn't feel like paying him to do it but it was just easier and now it's done and I should have it soon so I think it's worth it to save yourself the aggravation.

if you buy in 09 it has to go on your 09 tax return which isn't due until April 15, 2010.

No, I spoke with the IRS and you can amend your 2008 return to get the credit now even if you bought in 2009.
Here's the text from the IRS website:
First-time homebuyers who purchase a home in 2009 can claim the credit on either a 2008 tax return, due April 15, 2009, or a 2009 tax return, due April 15, 2010. The credit may not be claimed before the closing date. But, if the closing occurs after April 15, 2009, a taxpayer can still claim it on a 2008 tax return by requesting an extension of time to file or by filing an amended return. News release 2009-27 has more information on these options.

DH and I bought in 09 and had it amended to our 08 tax return. We had no problems, our accountant did it for us.

Not true. You can file an amended return. Says so right on the website for the program.

We did, DH did all the paperwork himself. Not sure how he did it, I haven't even looked at it, but you should be able to do it yourself no problem. good luck!
