Re: Finally bought a wall A/c

Good to know. I have to replace an ancient one in my Dad's house. I was worrying about a new one fitting into the hole in the wall created by the old one.

Jay's does a lot of business with my dad's K of C so I'll try them.

Thanks for the post Scott.

Now I have to try to find the time to do this.Chat Icon

Re: Finally bought a wall A/c

Remember not to over due A/C size as it can be very costly and not as effective.

10,000 BTU is very powerful and meant for big room (not saying your bedroom is not big)

here are two guides to use to determine how much power you need.

Consumer Reports A/C Guide

Jays is great. Every winter we go and have one of the old wall a/c's replaced, it's about half the price as we get quoted in the summer. We only have 1 left to replace.

Wow.. was the unit old? how big is the room? is the room always in the sun and how are the windows...

everything makes a big difference is why i mention the size of the unit where it will draw alot of electricity, etc..

You are right about this. We got rid of an old AC last year and bought a new one this year. The attic is directly over our bedroom and upstairs. It tends to me warmer than the rest of the house. We bought an 8000btu Sharp. It's not the quietest ac but it does the job. I have a pretty decent sized bedroom. The old ac was a 12000 btu that was over 15 years old and didn't do the job it should have. I would have to leave it on for hrs before it would cool the room.

Either way, good luck with the ac..may you be cool very soon!

Re: Finally bought a wall A/c

Our room is directly below the attic too. We are thinking about putting in an attic fan. My dad says that will help tremendously. The other a/c is only two or three years old and would cool off our apartment, but we were in a basement.

Sorry to crash but you mentioned at attic fan. We have an attic fan. would you use one at night or just during the day?

They left us two A/Cs with the house, we need to check them out and see if they work.

Yes, an attic fan is very important.

An attic fan goes on automatically when the temp in your attic reaches a certain temp you preset on it's thermostat. Ours was set to 95 but it was on all of the time so we upped it to 100 or 110 (the temp in the attic).
