Fine motor skills

DD had her 4 year well visit today...and they had her do a few drawing examples and told me that I need to work on her fine motor skills that she is way below average Chat Icon She went to nursery school last year and is in pre-k this year...but apparently, she is behind in this skill. What can I do to get her up to speed?

Hmm...I am not sure, but maybe get her coloring books and practice coloring "inside the lines" with her...sitting down and modeling for her, helping her, etc. Maybe that will help her get better at controlling her range of motion, etc.

Re: Fine motor skills

Some things you can do with her are:

1. shred paper with her hands, as she gets better let her cut the paper with a scissor. As she gets better draw a line on the paper and let her cut on the line.

2. Have her practice picking up things with a tweezer.

3. Break the crayon in half and let her draw with half a crayon.

4. Give her skinny markers instead of fat ones.

5. Play those fishing games, the ones you have to catch the magnetic fish with a pole.

Hope this helps...

Re: Fine motor skills

Or even just drawing basic shapes for her on paper (square, circle, zig-zag lines, etc.) and having her trace them with a crayon?

Great ideas!!!

DS gets OT for fine motor and these are some of the things they do with him:

1) Game perfection - picking up the pieces and putting them in the correct spot

2) picking up different size pom pom balls with large tweezers

3) crumpling and shredding paper. Also a lot of playdoh which helps build muscles in their hands

4) stringing beads

I also taught 3 yr. old nursery school while I was in college. We introduced them to scissors. I also would draw simple shapes (circle, square, triangle) on a piece of paper and they would trace them. The same with their names.

Thanks Chat Icon Chat Icon

Check Lakeshore learning. I buy a bunch of stuff there for DS that I see his therapist use during his sessions.

Does she have a problem using her hands bilaterally? Are her hands weak?
