Finger Foods
OK - what does this mean and what are you giving your 7 mo old? He has 1 tooth and I am TERRIFIED of giving him the gerber puffs but want to start him on something he can grab w/ his hands. What should I do?

Re: Finger Foods
I have started giving Jacob the gerber puffs. I felt those were the best to start off with since they melt in your mouth. I don't give him a full one, I break one up at a time and then I give it to him.
Unfortunately he still doesn't know what to do but I figure he will get the hang of it ..

Re: Finger Foods
You should put one of those gerber puffs on your tongue and get confident in how quickly in can dissolve. Give him half of one at first until you are comfortable with a whole one. Or wait two months, there is no rush!

Re: Finger Foods
Miranda is the same age as Joseph and I haven't even thought about this yet. I just don't feel like she's ready but she also doesn't have any teeth and isn't the biggest fan of baby food yet like most of the babies. I think we've got a while before finger foods.

Re: Finger Foods
I tried giving Jared the puffs around that age and almost had a heart attack. He choked on one and I whacked him so hard to get it out. I JUST started up with them again and he's 10 months now.

Re: Finger Foods
He's so ready. He grabs the food out of our hands and doesn't want ME to feed him anymore - he just wants the spoon himself which is a disaster. Maybe I'll try the puffs and see. Thanks!

This is just my experience, I'd stick with the puffs at first or something very small (like extremely well cooked veggies or soft melon and cut up small.) The biter biscuits have a tendency to break off in large pieces and when they aren't use to "chewing" they can potential choke. There's nothing wrong with using them, I've always waited until later to try them and kept a close eye, esp once they get soggy.

Re: Finger Foods
I feel like EMily is ready too because she doesn't always like when we feed her anymore either and she totally grabs whatever we have.
I have tried some things, like last night i gave her a cucumber spear minus the seeds which my SIL used to do and she just held it and sucked on it. DH was at her side watching her with it while I was making dinner.
A lot of stuff I put in that teething bag but the thing is a PITA to clean!!
I am thinking about trying the puffs also...We'll see. She's started to enjoy scooping her baby food off of the spoon, smearing it on the tray of the highchair, then scooping it up with her fingers to put it in her mouth and eat it. How's that about being ready for finger foods!

Yes -- I noticed that the bitter biscuits break easily. actually there were only about 5 whole ones in the entire box! Emily loves them so they go into the teething bag.

Ah, yes, that darn teething bag. A pain to clean! I retired mine last time with Gabriella. Maybe I'll try it again though with Gianni.

Re: Finger Foods
If you are nervous to give him somethings he can choke on, why not buy the feeding net its great, I give Julia the bitter biscuits but I break it in half and put it in the feeding net. Its such a great thing to have, so you not worried they are going to choke on it. I also give her the gerber puffs but I break them in half, she doesnt have a problem with them at all. I got the feeding net at BBB. I put all foods and fruits in it for her.
Baby Safe Feeder by Designs 2-U
Chewing on the baby safe feeder feels soothing and satisfying. This mesh bag will allow your little one to get the goodness of fresh foods. This helps the transition from drinking to chewing while reducing the high risk of choking.
ETA: Its not hard to clean, I stick it in the dish washer and it comes out super clean!--lol

I give this to Ryan with fresh fruits or whatever, and I feel like because its not food, he dosent know what to do with it...
If I put the cookie on the tray- he knows to put it in his mouth...
If I put the cookie in the net.... he just thinks its a toy...
How can I change that?>

Julia did that to in the begining when I first gave it to her she just looked at me like, ok what the hell is this? but once she was holding it for a little bit and could smell (I guess) the cookie in it or fruit she put it in her mouth and away she went, she got it right away. I also wet it a little bit with water just to get it soften a bit.

Re: Finger Foods
this was just my experience, but - please be careful with the biter biscuits. sofia almost choked on one when a large piece came off and she tried to swallow it. i stuck my finger in her mouth so fast!!! i was sitting there watching her, and it still happened so quickly! DH threw the rest of the box out immediately! the puffs were much easier!

Re: Finger Foods
We started puffs when he was around 7 months. He had two teeth at that point and was totally ready. He got the hang of it very quickly. Around 8 months, once he got the hang of puffs, we started with cheerios. Now, at 9 months, he downs them like a champ.

Don't be confused. Every child is different and what works for one, won't work for another. I can't even tell you how strange it is to see two kids (my two) have so many similiarites and so many differences.
If he's doing well with them, great! Gabriella was on complete table food by 9-10 months because she was ready and although I don't think Gianni will be on the early side of that, I'm sure he'll fall close to that.

Re: Finger Foods
I was told to wait until 10 mos by my ped so I haven't tried any finger foods yet. But everyone tells me the gerber puffs are great because they dissolve so quickly, so that is what I plan to start with when it's time.

Re: Finger Foods
Biter biscuits really make me nervous. Cole choked so fast on one I had him upside down whacking his back and a huge piece came out. That was the end of all finger food for us until about 10 months. I broke the puffs in half and gave them to him. I felt they dissolved better than the cheerios, but I have a friend who was uncomfortable with puffs and only gave quartered cheerios. It really is trial and error, you have to do what you feel comfortable with.

Re: Finger Foods
Well, I thought Joseph had an ear infection so I took him to the pedi yesterday. He's doesn't, but while I was there I asked about finger foods. He said I can start:
Mashed Potatos Peas Ice Cream (not yogurt at all) and cheerios (not the puffs) cut very small
At about 9mos he said I can start w/ egg yolks (no whites) and pancakes.
HOWEVER, all of a sudden my hungry hippo (who now weighs 20lbs as of yesterday ) is not liking me feeding him w/ a spoon. I think he's going thru a very independent stage. He wouldn't even take the ice cream...
