Finished basement as playroom for toddler- please come in

Does anyone use their finished basement as a playrom for their kids and if so how old are they?

We thought we were gona do this when she was born then decided its easier to have her on the same level as us.

Now she is 18 months and we are running out of room on her first floor. We have a HUGE living room BUT the layout is open so it just seems like she has taken over the whole floor. I understand that's gonna happen but esp now after xmas I don't see how everythng will fit.

So I am reconsidering using our basement but I am concerned bc its not like I can spend all my time in the basement and I am scared to leave her down there alone, even in a playzone.

What do you all do?

My basement is finished ( I have an in-home daycare)...My DS is 5 and still will not go down there alone..My step-daugher didn't want to go alone either until she was nearly 8 ..

It definately helps as far as having another spot to put toys, but they still seem to find their way back upstairs Chat Icon

I didn't want ANY toys upstairs, so our finished basement has our toys and a tv and couch for us to relax on.

I was the same as you, except we don't have a big living area upstairs. . .so right after DS's first birthday we moved everything down. . SO much better. We don't use it much during the week b/c we're upstairs getting ready for work & then at night when I get home from work, I'm upstairs cleaning, bath .etc. . .however it was HUGE life saver and I'm SO glad we did it. I can take a picture later Chat Icon

Our basement is our play area also (although I do have toys in the living room currently bc thats where the XMas tree is). Once Xmas is over, I'm moving everything to the basement for my peace of mind!

ETA - DD is 14.5 months old

So do you let her play down there with you ALWAYS present? Or do you let her play and you are up and down all day?

Yes, I'm always present. Once I left her to run upstairs and pee, but otherwise we are always with her. We have a big tv and computer set up down there so it's her playroom/our second den.

we just finished ours, but actually made it open so that it looks like a true downstairs as opposed to just a door going down. Since it is open I can hear DS when he is down there and if I get down on my knees I can spy on him if necessary. It has worked very well for us.

I have to take new pictures. The "baby area" is now finished and I rearranged some toys and brought his hug ride-on-train inside... but here are the old pics. PICTURES DS is 2.5 years and plays down there by himself. I have a summer video monitor to keep an eye on him.

Your basement is awesome.. we have a much smaller space but can put her toys down there and a little seating area, TV, etc... I am inspired to get to work on it now! As I watch her playing with her kitchen because its in the middle of our living room... And I like the idea of the video monitor down there! I dont use it in her bedroom anymore, what a great idea!

Finishing the basement was the best thing ever for us,..all of dd's toys are down there, i do not want them in the living room(it is too small for too many toys)..she is 3 1/2 and goes down there all the time by herself, plays, watches tv..the basement has been finished for over a year and pretty much right away she went down there by herself..i would check on her more frequently then i do now when she was younger or stay down there with her
