Fire Island experts
So I have lived on LI all my life- and live very close now to the Fire Island Ferries- yet I have never been there. I think I want to go next week for the day when hubby and I are off.
Can anyone recommend what section we should go to- which ferry to take etc.
Also- my husband is not a big lay on the beach type person- is there other stuff to do? Is there someplace nice to have lunch etc?
TIA!

Very close to Sayville and Patchogue... But Bayshore is an option too...

Cherry Grove (Sayville) has lots of places to walk around- my DH and I go there all the time. It is a gay beach though although there are many straight people there too.
Ocean Bay Park (Bay Shore) also has a lot of places to walk around and eat.

You can take the ferry out of Bay Shore and head over to Ocean Beach. The ferry ride is 30 minutes and is $15 roundtrip per person. Go to Fire Island Ferries for the schedule.
Ocean Beach has a ton of cute little shops, places to get ice cream, restaurants on the water - there's even a spa if you're going to be there for the day. There are no cars there so everything is in walking distance. There is of course, the beach too.

Ocean Beach is the BEST! we had a house there 2 summers ago, and it was incredible! just to even visit or hang out there for the day is so much fun!! the cute shops, and little restaurants! walking around , feels like you are totally somewhere else!!

Re: Fire Island experts
DH and I prefer Davis Park from the Patchogue Ferry. It is much quieter than Ocean Beach. There is a resturant there (The Casino) and a bar where you can eat lunch as well.

I think you mean Ocean Beach-OBP only has a couple of places and a nice beach. I would rent bikes and tour around to the OP

Re: Fire Island experts
I spent 11 summers in Ocean Beach/Corneille . I recommend it but there are other towns I like, too. Some of the very small towns don't have much at all in the way of places to eat or shopping but most towns at least have something.

i second this! out of patchogue is davis park but there is like only one rest....if i had to choose (out of the 3 i have been too) it would be ocean beach, then ocean bay park, than davis park

If you want to go during the week, then MAYBE you can get a hotel reservation at this point in the season. For a weekend, I would bet that you would have to wait until after Labor Day. They sell out early. They aren't like 4 and 5 start hotels but they will do. Try Cleggs or The Palms. Oh yeah, I just heard that The Palms bought another property. Anyone know about that?
