Firefighters rescue man who fell in storm drain - With a happy ending....
BY JENNIFER BARRIOS | [email protected] 11:00 PM EDT, August 28, 2008
A Long Island man had to be rescued from the bottom of a 20-foot storm drain in Farmingville Thursday night after he fell in while trying to retrieve his keys.
Farmingville Fire Department Assistant Chief Ed Stewart said the accident happened at about 8 p.m. The man, whom Stewart would not identify, had removed the lid from the storm drain on Wendy Drive, then went back to a friend's house to get a flashlight. When he returned, he apparently did not see the gaping hole and fell in, Stewart said.
The man's friends called for help. Two firefighters wearing masks and protective gear were lowered into the drain and placed the man in a rescue basket, which was winched up by a fire truck, Stewart said.
The man was taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center, where he was in stable condition. Stewart did not describe the man's injuries, but said he didn't believe any were life-threatening.
Ultimately, the firefighters did retrieve the man's keys. --------------------------------
At least he got his keys back.... How many emergency people were involved in his little "retrieval mission"....

so HE removed the strom drain cover but when he returned - with a flashlight - he didn't see the "gaping hole"???
might there have been a little alcohol involved?
