First birthday at a park

I'm thinking about having DD's first birthday at a park. Does anyone have any experiences with this? If so, which park did you use or if you went to a party that was at a park which park was it? I live in Suffolk County. I have been to Hecksher before for parties, but wondering if there are any others out there.

Also, do you think its easier to have it at a park that in the backyard? I figured tables and chairs are already there! and everything else is probably the same.

Good thing about a park then a backyard is they will have playgrounds. But the backyard you dont have to worry about strangers.

I did Jared's 1st brithday at Eisenhower Park. The only PITA, is bringing all the food there. If you had it at home, everything is easily accessible.

I was thinking of catering the food and having it delivered there. My SIL had my BIL's 40th at a park and the deli delivered the food right to the site.

some parks have only one caterer they have a contract with and you must use that one. Thats something to check into.

Every park I looked into had that...

I don't have a swingset or anything for the kids at home so that is a huge benefit, but strangers..I didn't think of that. Hopefully if I do have it a park everyone is responsible enough to watch their own children.

From your other post about alcohol at b-days. Some parks don't allow alcohol, so that may make your other decision easier... Chat Icon Chat Icon

Suffolk County Parks rules, for example:

B. Permits.
(1) A permit shall be obtained from the Park Commissioner or his designee before entering a park in the following instances:
(a) Buses on scheduled or charter trips.
(b) Groups and organizations comprising ten (10) or more persons attending at a single occasion.
(c) Persons desiring to use the park or portion thereof for a special event, celebration or group-sponsored activity.
(d) To bring into any park beer, ale or other alcoholic beverages.

It looks like you would need a permit for the party, but you would also need one for alcohol. Just something to keep in mind.

Re: First birthday at a park

My Dh wanted to do my DD's 1st birthday at a park but I nixed it. It just seemed like a lot more work to me than having it in the yard. I was not thrilled with the idea of having food outside in a park in mid-July.

I will say though - you generally have to reserve space so you should look into it very soon. I know for the place he wanted to book (Wantagh Park) the reservations began booking in February and many were taken quickly.
