First Day

I have been teaching 8 years, and I always switch up the activities I do each year. What do you do, on the first day, aside from rules, labeling, etc, icebreakers? activities? Books you read aloud?

First Day

I like to switch it up too. I teach 6th grade. What grade do you teach?
I do the usual rules and procedures, give them time to organize their desks and supplies. I do a couple of ice breakers--I do "find someone who..." On a handout, I have a grid with different criteria--Uses Fios, Has a birthday in April, etc. They have to find someone in the class who fits the phrase. That person has to sign their sheet and they can't have the same person sign more than once. It forces them to walk around and talk to each other. I love this and have been doing it for years.

Great idea! I teach 5th grade. I always feel like I forget what I do the year before and I like to try different things. The first day always flies by anyway, so I always wind up planning too much.

Re: First Day

OMG, I overplan, too. That whole first week is a mess of started activities that we never finish. In case you haven't heard of it, here's a good site with a great teacher forum with lots and lots of ideas--atozteacherstuff.com
If I come up with anything new that's good, I'll let you know.

I do this exact same activity!! I love it for several reasons-
1- You can observe how the kids interact with each other and check out how they relate with their peers
2- You can find out some interesting little facts about them that you wouldn't normally know
3- You don't have to DO anything for a few minutes
